The Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, California is one of the best free boondocking spots I have been to anywhere. There are seemingly endless private camping nooks nestled in between all of the huge boulders in the area. Most spots also have fire rings, and unlike national forest camping these days, you can still have campfires in the desert. Top it off with the amazing backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and this camping area is hard to beat. It's no wonder that so many movies have been filmed here.
