On day 8 during our Iceland travels, we had planned to hike the third highest waterfall of Iceland, Hengifoss. The hiking trail that leads up to the waterfall is 5 km long in total and the Hengifoss waterfall itself is 128 meters high. Hengifoss is situated in Eastern Iceland, not far from the eastern capital of Egilsstaðir.
The weather on that day was not good but at least it wasn't raining heavily,
Most of the time, the trail goes along the canyon that the water from Hengifoss has been carving over long periods.
On the trail, you can see several other smaller waterfalls and they are also really gorgeous.
The one below is Litlanesfoss.
When we were only about 500m from the main waterfall, I quickly noticed that sadly it is mostly in the clouds.
When we were at the end of the trail, we didn't see much 😟
This is basically what we saw when we arrived. I tried to post-process the pictures so I can bring out as much detail through the clouds as I can but it's still not enough.
It absolutely doesn't look like 128m high from the photos but it is.
The cliffs around the waterfall have red ground layers around it so with sunlight and clear visibility it looks absolutely spectacular.
We stayed there about 10 minutes and for a moment, clouds gave away for a little bit so I took a couple of more, still bad but a little clearer shots. Here you can even see a little bit of red ground layers.
It was starting to rain quite heavily so we started to hike back down for 2.5 kilometers.
As you can see the terrain is not very smooth and can be really slippery when wet.
I would definitely retake this hike sometime when I go back to Iceland and the sky is clear, or at least the clouds are at a higher altitude, it's a spectacular location and hike.
What a picturesque place to hike! And so quiet. I love that there are no people in sight. Is the sound of the water quite loud @greddyforce?
Actually, not too loud. The water volume is not huge but you can definitely hear it.
What a lovely place did you drink any !BEER there?
I had to drive a car so unfortunately no 😔
