Arriving in Belgrade by train from Novi sad, the first thing we did was walk to our hotel from the station to deposit our luggage and then head into town to discover what the capital city of Serbia had to offer.
Even though some parts were quite nice, there were other parts that seemed drab and fairly run down. The towns of Osijek and Novi Sad wre much more vibrant and picturesque. We met up with a local tour qutde who did her best to bring a bit of interest into the city with a detailed and informative history of Belgrade, which is one of the oldest permanently inhabitated cities in Europe.
When we had finished looking around the main city, we then followed a path which led to the city fortress. Belgrade is known by the locals as Beograd, which means “white city” or “white fortress.” Beo means “white” and grad means “city.” Named for its fortress, which was built on a white ridge which has been of strategic importance throughout previous eras. It was quite an impressive structure and aptly named.
On the cliff side of the fortress you can stand on the edge of the stone walls and gaze out at where the Danube and Sava rivers meet and was historically important as routes of travel between Europe and the Balkans. The fotress and the views of the rivers in the dusk hour was spectacular and would have been even better if there had been a decent sunset.
After a long day of travelling and sightseeing, we made our way to a small restaurant, had dinner with our tour guide, before retiring for a good nights sleep.
