Das Schöne am Reisen mit dem Wohnmobil ist, dass man auch in Gegenden eine passende Unterkunft finden kann, die man sonst nicht im Blick hat. Dafür nehme ich gerne einen kleinen Umweg in Kauf. Aber dieses Mal war kein Umweg nötig. Wenige Kilometer von der A8 entfernt, zwischen Stuttgart und München, kurz vor dem Albaufstieg, fanden wir in Holzmaden einen interessanten Wohnmobilstellplatz.
The nice thing about traveling with a motorhome is that you can also find suitable accommodation in areas that you wouldn't otherwise focus on. I'm happy to take a small detour for this. But this time no detour was necessary. A few kilometers from the A8 freeway, between Stuttgart and Munich, just before the Albaufstieg, we found an interesting motorhome site in Holzmaden.
Holzmaden
Holzmaden liegt in Baden-Württemberg in den unmittelbaren Ausläufern der Schwäbischen Alb, einer malerischen Landschaft aus Hügeln, Wäldern und Wiesen am Rande des Naturparks Schwäbisch-Fränkischer Wald. Der nahe gelegene Aichelberg und der Turmberg sind Überreste ehemaliger Vulkanschlote des Schwäbischen Vulkans. Die Kalksteinbrüche sind charakteristisch für die Region. Die sedimentären Gesteinsschichten geben einen Einblick in die geologische Vergangenheit.
Holzmaden is located in Baden-Württemberg in the direct foothills of the Swabian Alb, a picturesque landscape of hills, forests and meadows on the edge of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park. The nearby Aichelberg and Turmberg are remnants of former volcanic vents of the Swabian volcano. The limestone quarries are characteristic of the region. The sedimentary rock layers provide an insight into the geological past.
Der Wohnmobilstellplatz in Holzmaden versetzte uns weit zurück in die Vergangenheit, genauer gesagt in die Jurazeit, als ganz Europa von einem tropischen Meer überflutet war. In der Umgebung von Holzmaden wurden zahlreiche Fossilien aus der Jurazeit gefunden, darunter Ichthyosaurier (Fischsaurier) und andere Meeresbewohner. Gegenüber dem Wohnmobilstellplatz befindet sich eines der größten privaten Naturkundemuseen Deutschlands, das Urwelt-Museum Hauff. Gleich neben dem Wohnmobilstellplatz kann man in einem prähistorischen Steinbruch selbst nach Fossilien suchen oder Fossilien kaufen.
The motorhome site in Holzmaden took us far back in time, to the Jurassic period to be precise, when the whole of Europe was flooded by a tropical sea. Numerous fossils from the Jurassic period have been found in the area around Holzmaden, including ichthyosaurs (Fish dinosaur) and other sea creatures. Opposite the motorhome site is one of the largest private natural history museums in Germany, the Hauff Prehistoric Museum. Adjacent to the motorhome site, you can search for fossils yourself in a prehistoric quarry or buy fossils.

Fazit: Einzigartige geologische Funde und eine abwechslungsreiche Landschaft mit schönen Wander- und Radwegen machen Holzmaden zu einem interessanten Ausflugsziel für Natur- und Geschichtsliebhaber. Holzmaden ist als prähistorische Gemeinde weltberühmt. Tausende von Interessierten und Fachleuten besuchen jährlich das Hauff-Urgeschichtsmuseum.
Conclusion: Unique geological finds and a varied landscape with beautiful hiking and cycling trails make Holzmaden an interesting excursion destination for nature and history lovers. Holzmaden is world-famous as a prehistoric community. Thousands of interested people and experts visit the Hauff Prehistoric Museum every year.
Der Wohnmobilstellplatz ...
The RV park ...
... ist ein kostenloser Parkplatz für 3 Wohnmobile vor dem Hauff Urweltmuseum, der ganzjährig genutzt werden kann. Das Museum ist ganzjährig von 9 bis 17 Uhr geöffnet. Die Fläche ist geschottert und weitgehend eben. Es gibt keinen Strom, kein Trinkwasser und keine Möglichkeit, Grau- oder Schwarzwasser auf dem Gelände zu entsorgen. Der Platz ist daher eher für autarke Fahrzeuge auch über 8m geeignet. Die Entfernung zum Ortszentrum beträgt ca. 15 Minuten zu Fuß. In der Nähe des Sportplatzes gibt es eine leckere Pizzeria. Ausgeschilderte Rad- und Wanderwege sind vorhanden.
... is a free parking space for 3 motorhomes in front of the Hauff Prehistoric World Museum that can be used all year round. The museum is open all year round from 9 am to 5 pm. The surface is gravel and largely flat. There is no electricity, no drinking water and no possibility to dispose of gray or black water on the site. The site is therefore more suitable for self-sufficient vehicles. The distance to the town center is approx. 15 minutes on foot. There is a delicious pizzeria near the sports field. Signposted cycling and hiking trails are available.
