The Silent Guardian: Understanding the Vital Role of Your Kidneys

I am writing this as a reflection from a recent case I was part of the managing team, I realise how unaware many well educated people are about their body and the spend all their hard earned money paying for their ignorance.

As we go about our daily lives, it's easy to overlook the vital organs that keep our bodies functioning. One such organ is the kidney, which works tirelessly behind the scenes to filter toxins, regulate minerals, and maintain blood pressure. But what happens when our kidneys start to fail?

A 42-year-old man who used to smoke and drink alcohol, but stopped five years ago. Despite this, he began to experience facial swelling, leg swelling, and reduced urine production. He even started to feel back pain. Unbeknownst to him, his kidneys were slowly failing, and he eventually collapsed due to uremic encephalopathy, a condition where the brain becomes affects due to toxic effect of excess urea in the blood.

This story highlights the importance of kidney health and the devastating consequences of neglecting it. So, what exactly do our kidneys do?

  1. Filtering toxins: Our kidneys clear out toxic components from the blood, ensuring that our bodies remain healthy.

  • Hypertension, which can further damage the kidneys, brain, and heart

Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to protect your kidney health:

  3. Monitor your blood pressure: Keep your blood pressure under control to reduce the risk of kidney damage.
