The theme of this month is - RESPIRATORY HEALTH
Breath in, breath out
Our respiratory system is an essential one. We cannot live without breathing. The little movements allow air in and out of our lungs. A simple, yet important one that is so essential to life itself. Unfortunately, as simple humans as we are we often take things for granted and breathing is just one more of those things. Easy to forget but not so easy if it starts to fail.
According to WHO (World Health Organization),
Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) affect the airways and other structures of the lungs. Some of the most common are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, occupational lung diseases and pulmonary hypertension. In addition to tobacco smoke, other risk factors include air pollution, occupational chemicals and dusts, and frequent lower respiratory infections during childhood.
The numbers related to chronic respiratory diseases are scary but nonetheless, they are true:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide, causing 3.23 million deaths in 2019.
Many of CDRs are related to our lifestyles but there are others that can be related to the place where we live, more specifically related to air pollution. In this regard, the statistics are also overwhelming:
In 2019, 99% of the world’s population was living in places where the WHO air quality guidelines levels were not met.
The combined effects of ambient air pollution and household air pollution are associated with 6.7 million premature deaths annually.
With this being said, the MED-HIVE community thought it is an important subject to discuss and more importantly, a topic to raise awareness about.
Therefore, it's now officially the beginning of the month theme!
In the following days, we will launch weekly challenges with prizes to be won, so make sure to pay attention to the @med-hive account in the next couple of days! Just to give you all a sneak peek of what might happen this month here's a summary:
Throughout May we will be having 4 weekly prompts.
More information about the weekly prompts will come out on their respective Mondays. These next posts will have a statement explaining the rules and the topic for the week and the prizes at stake!
Stay tuned and don't miss a thing!
