A very old olive tree (Olea europaea), which I found on a visit to the Roman Villa of São Cucufate, a villa from the Roman Empire which was the center of a private farm, with origins in the 1st century.
A tree that will certainly be more than 1000 years old, like many that have already been dated in the Alentejo region, planted more than a thousand years ago... Some have already been certified and dated over 3000 years old !!!
Take a look at the thickness of its old trunk... Truly impressive!
This amazing piece of history is located near Vila de Frades, Vidigueira (Alentejo region, Southern Portugal).

Interesting to think about how long they've endured and the number of olives they've provided over such a long time.

Wow your photos really remind me of a scene from the movie The Shawshank Redemption, when Red finally gets out of prison....you remember that scene?
