Back to the past Series: The dolmen

in Photography3 years ago

Just another one of the numerous megalithic sites located near the city of Évora (Alentejo region, Southern Portugal).

In this case a well preserved dolmen (a type of single-chamber megalithic tomb) in middle of nowhere, that is classified as Portuguese National Monument.

Supposed to have been built between the beginning of the 4th and the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, It features the typical funerary chamber with an elongated polygonal plan, 4 m wide, raised by 7 pillars, 2 m high from the ground surface. Surprisingly, this structure still maintains its original cover intact.
The access corridor is considered one of the longest in this region (9.5m long by 1m high), retaining 6 of the 10 pillars that constituted it on both sides, in addition to two slabs belonging to its original roof, with "dimples" engraved on its outer face.

I just love these places... There's always something mystical in the atmosphere!
