Meat flies or the Latin name for meat flies are Sarcophagidae, getting their name from the habit of placing mature larvae in spoiled or rotting meat. This type of fly is also known to breed in animal carcasses.

The length is 6-14mm.

The chest cavity is light gray and has 3 longitudinal dark stripes.

The belly is also light gray, with black patches to give it a checkerboard appearance.

The waste fly's life cycle lasts for 2 - 4 weeks.

Adult female flies will place the larvae in a suitable food medium, such as rotting meat or fish, animal waste or in rotting food waste found in trash cans.

The larvae feed for several days, then move from the feeding medium to pupate in the drier and adjacent areas.

Habit

They are attracted to breeding in places such as rotting sewage, excrement, and human food.

This type of fly poses a threat to human health, transmitting diseases such as leprosy bacilli and intestinal pseudomyiasis to people who eat their larvae.
