The lakes in Minneapolis are lovely for walking. For safety, they have separate lanes for walkers and cyclists, and they are quite large
— 2-3 miles around. We normally walk around Lake of the Isles, as it is walking distance from my daughter’s apartment. But today we went to the adjoining lake - Bde Maka Ska - which means White Earth Lake in the Dakota Indian language. The name was changed from Lake Calhoun to this name a few years ago.
The lake is still mostly covered in ice, and it was a bizarre deep turquoise color under the ominous gray sky.
Some of the pictures make it look quite gray, and others I have enhanced with a filter to bring up the blue tones, which were more like what we saw.
All around the lake are features and activities. It was cool and there was a wind blowing, but here in Minnesota we are so thrilled when the snow melts that we are out enjoying the warmer weather.
A skate park...
Kiddie play areas...
Canoes for when the weather warms for real and all the ice is gone...
There is also a band shell, seasonal snack bar, and decorative items like over-sized Adirondack chairs, as well as an iron art piece with words (I’m assuming) in Dakota.
I’ll share a few more pictures of the lake views, including some ducks enjoying the bit of open water between the shore and the edge of the ice. The two people walking are my husband and daughter. I couldn’t help including Yellow Man in one of my pictures of them.
And finally, a few more modified images, in monochrome, which I think brought out a sinister side to the warning signs about thin ice.

Very nice photographs - great blog.
Thanks!
😀
It feels like I took a walk there, in part because you gave us good info about where 'there' is. Sometimes photoblogs on Hive don't provide adequate context, so nice to read. ... Looks a little too busy for my taste. I prefer walks without all the people. :)
Me too. Most of the trails I walk are very sparsely populated. In the city, there is always a lot of traffic on the trails and it gets completely crazy in the summer!
Oh.. This is a wonderful walk in the mornings, just before breakfast.
Can really burn up lots of calories and keep fit too
Yes, that would be a great place for an early morning walk!
A number of our parks have separate lanes for bikes and walking too but I still feel there are crazy cyclists out there. Nice chair with the "ice cream sticks"
Ha ha - yes, the Adirondack chair does look like it's made of popsicle sticks!
Lovely walk. It's much relaxing to walk under a cold weather. The weather here is hot and humid. And I don't really like going out coz walking for a while under the hot sun, I will be all sweaty and smelly. 😂
I can't wait until it gets hot here! It has been cold for way too long. But I'm used to it. In fact, I moved here because I would rather be cool than hot. You can always add more layers to warm up, but there's only so many things you can talk off. Ha ha ha.
Totally agree with you... lol...
Amazing photos and well written blog 👍
Thanks very much!
Ducks have already flown back and finding their spots on the water, spring is officially here (there) by time and nature's clock. I like watching the ice melt. Scary hearing it crack tho lol

Yes, the melting ice is a joy. We celebrate here when there's an official "ice out" announcement when the last of the ice is gone. Then all the boats come out!
Nice walk clouds in the first photo look very dramatic.
Thank you for stopping by! Yes, the clouds and ice-covered lake were quite dramatic that day.
You did capture the scene very nicely.
