Far from the upper part of the city, where the remains of the old gates and walls still guard the enchanted castle, the unrecognisable vestiges of what was once the pilgrims' hospital, as well as that priceless jewel of Cantabrian Gothic architecture, which, under the patronage of Our Lady of the Angels, the powerful Corro family turned into an eternal home for the mortal remains of its illustrious members, the area of the port, separated from that untamed arm of the sea by a melancholic bridge that serves as a border to define that metaphorical sunset that sees the sun pass by every evening while the sea becomes a mysterious marsh, observes, as in the myth of Narcissus, its image reflected in the mirror of unfathomable eternities that is always the sea.
Behind the fish market, where the fish are often still wriggling and struggling in the ambivalent interior of the fish, awaiting the inevitable fate of being caught for a second time, in this case by the eager and early-rising hands of the buyer, the Sanctuary of a seafaring Virgin, the Barquera, with all the force of her legendary presence, offers comfort to the fisherman who every day has to go out to deal with a sea of unbreakable character.
It is also an area where the stomach of the tourist, always eager for culinary sensations, is encouraged to be seduced, of course in the shade of some arcades that use the old walls as a support for powerful marketing, aimed at startling that dark object of desire that inevitably surfaces through the eyes, awakening the frenzy of that incorrigible demon, which, without a doubt, is always gluttony, especially after a good swim. But, with or without daydreaming, it is another happy day in San Vicente de la Barquera.
