Apart from this tower, which began as little more than an outpost that the Romans had in a place that, due to its characteristics, could well remind us of that same place, located nowhere, where the Italian writer, Dino Buzzatti placed the unfortunate lieutenant Drogo, relegating him to a life of total ostracism and boredom, peering at each dawn into a desert through whose sands the enemy never ended up arriving, La Coruña also has, at least, two monumental Romanesque churches that are worth seeing.
Leaving the nearby church of Saint Mary of the Field for another occasion, the church of Saint James, adjacent to a Captaincy General, in whose buildings you can still see, in addition, some remains of sculpture, also Romanesque, is a church, which, like many others of its kind spread along the coast, has a nave, which, in some way, recalls the shell of an old inverted ship, stranded on land since the dawn of the 12th century, at least, so that the navigators of the spirit find refuge, shelter and who knows if also wisdom, among the old keys that the anonymous stonemasons left captured, with uneven skill, in their sculptural motifs.
Equipped, moreover, with a main apse and two small apsidioles, which would correspond to the traditional chapels of the Epistle and the Gospel, apart from its two monumental doorways, one of them, the main one, facing west and displaying a unique Agnus Dei in the tympanum, the beauty of this temple also stands out for the formidable rose window, which, in some way and also representing that unique Wheel of Fortune to which we are all subject, as navigators of destiny that we are, contributes, greatly, to play with the effects of light, creating a small sun of hope in the eternal chiaroscuros of the nave, above a High Altarpiece, whose center, presided over by an image of the Son of Thunder himself, encourages pilgrims to a final effort towards a destiny, which, increasingly, is felt to be closer.
Aparte de esa torre, que comenzó siendo poco menos que un puesto avanzado que los romanos tenían en un lugar, que, por sus características, bien podría recordar ese mismo lugar, situado en ninguna parte, donde el escritor italiano, Dino Buzzatti situó al desventurado teniente Drogo, relegándole a una vida de total ostracismo y aburrimiento, atisbando cada amanecer un desierto por cuyas arenas nunca terminaba de llegar el enemigo, La Coruña tiene también, cuando menos, dos monumentales iglesias románicas que merece la pena conocer.
Dejando para otra ocasión la cercana iglesia de Santa María del Campo, la iglesia de Santiago, colindante con una Capitanía General, en cuyos edificios todavía puede verse, además, algún resto de escultura, románica también, es una iglesia, que, como otras muchas de su género repartidas a lo largo y ancho de la costa, tiene una nave, que, de alguna manera, recuerda el cascarón de un viejo barco invertido, varado en tierra desde los albores del siglo XII, cuando menos, para que los navegantes del espíritu encuentren refugio, techo y quién sabe si además sabiduría, entre las viejas claves que los anónimos canteros dejaron plasmadas, con desigual destreza, en sus motivos escultóricos.
Dotada, por lo demás, de ábside principal y dos pequeños absidiolos, que corresponderían con las tradicionales capillas de la Epístola y del Evangelio, aparte de sus dos monumentales portadas, una de ellas, la principal, orientada hacia poniente y luciendo un singular Agnus Dei en el tímpano, la belleza de este templo destaca, así mismo, por el formidable rosetón, que, de alguna manera y representando también a esa singular Rueda de la Fortuna a la que estamos sujetos todos, como navegantes del destino que somos, contribuye, sobremanera, a jugar con los efectos de la luz, creando un pequeño sol de esperanza en los eternos claroscuros de la nave, por encima de un Retablo Mayor, cuyo centro, presidido por una imagen del mismísimo Hijo del Trueno, anima a los peregrinos a un esfuerzo final hacia un destino, que, cada vez, se presiente más próximo.
