Unlike France, and for obvious reasons to seize their wealth during the ill-fated reign of King Philip the Fair, there is no census in Spain of the possessions that the mediatic Order of the Temple had in our country, except for that rather scarce documentation that establishes some donations obtained through military support provided in different kingdoms or through exchanges made, either with kings or with other similar orders, so that, on many occasions, there is no other choice but to put into practice that faith, which does not always move mountains, and to let oneself be seduced by legends and local traditions.
This occurs, possibly with more intensity than in other places, in that sovereign natural paradise, which is, without a doubt, the Principality of Asturias, where, if there were once documents that could confirm the assertions of the people, these, however, ended up wrapping buns and sweets in the markets of the pilgrimages, especially after that event, eminently chaotic for the Historical-Artistic Heritage of Spain, which was, without a doubt, the so-called Mendizábal Confiscation.
Based on these popular traditions, it has always been said that this small and enigmatic church, located in the vicinity of Pola de Siero and which responds to the curious name of Saint Stefan of Aramil or of the Knights, at some point in its long history, was a Templar church and in it one can curiously appreciate the presence, in the archivolts of one of its porticos, of some figures, the Norman birds, which, paradoxically, are also found in other Asturian Romanesque churches, whose authorship also oscillates the mysterious presence of the knights of such a fascinating and at the same time, unfortunate Order.
