Interesting Informations About Swans

  • The origin of black swans is Australia.

  • Swans are close relatives with geese and ducks.

  • The swan, which is seen frequently while sliding between the lakes, has represented elegance and delicacy for a long time.

  • Swans are the largest members of the Anatidae family and are the largest flying birds.

  • The largest swan-like mute swans can reach 1.5 meters in length and 15 kilograms in mass. The wingspan is over 3 meters.

  • Swans live for about 20-30 years. There are some variations among the more common swan species. Trumpeter swan (Cygnus Buccinator), the largest swan species in North America, has been living in the wild for an average of 24 years, but is known to live up to 33 years in captivity (like a zoo).

  • The silent swan lives on average 19-20 years; tundra swan has a similar lifespan. Introduced to North America and Europe, black swans of Australia and New Zealand can live up to 40 years in the wild.

  • Swans were found on both sides of the Equator along the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Northern swans are usually orange-billed white, and south-swans tend to be in a mixture of red, orange or black-beaked, white and black.

  • Swans live in the following habitats: meadows, lakes and ponds, rivers and streams, and wetlands crawling on the flood.

  • Swans are usually found in temperate environments, rarely occur in tropical regions.

  • Swans are herbivores. Swans feed primarily on water vegetation, their tall height allows them to feed on plants growing on river beds. They also eat small creatures, such as mollusks, small fish, frogs, and worms that cling to the vegetation.

  • While some population is migrating or partially migrating, some swans reside where they live. Mute Swan is a partial immigrant, resides in Western European regions, but in Eastern Europe and Asia, it is completely immigrated. Whooper Swans, Tundra Swan and Trumpeter Swans migrate completely. Evidence shows that the Black-necked Swan migrated part of its range.

  • Paired swan pairs tend to stay together throughout the year; However, they are quite social, except during the growing season. And often they come together with a large number of other swans. During the mating season, couples will aggressively defend their land.

  • The swans set up their nests on the leaves. The swans lay 3 to 9 eggs. The young swans hatch after 1 month of incubation.

  • A little swan usually lives up to about 4 years old or as a herd until it is considered an adult. Then, they look for a man from the herd they live with and join the wife to find their own mating area.

  • Due to their size, swans have several predators in the wild. The main hunter of the swan is the person who hunts the swan because it has flesh and feathers. Other predators of swans include wolves, raccoons, and foxes.

  • Before the European explorers came to Australia, all swans were believed to be white. Dutch mariner, Antounie Caen, observed the Australian Black Swans in Shark Bay in 1636, and was amazed by them.

  • Black swans have been the subject of many poetry, fairy tales, legends and musical compositions due to their elegant movements in the water.

Anyway, let's take a little photographic point of view. I guess there is no other species that can look so aesthetic and delicate on the water.

Have a nice and wonderful day for everyone who loves and to be loved and take care yourself.
