Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 35 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival!
After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, four weeks ago I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. (When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!)
But… I don’t want to just play any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So, I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?
And so – this week is the 12th instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!
So far, we have had:

4.The xylophone / glockenspiel
5.The Valiha (bamboo zither)
6.The ukelele

8.Random stuff I found in my kitchen
9.My toddler daughter’s baby-piano toy and rainstick
10.An antique wooden recorder
11.25L Plastic Water drums (remnants of Cape Town’s water crisis)
12.Wine bottle whistles!
Now it is time for the 13th “Instrument of the Week” – Rubber bands and exercise bands!
I’ve actually been known to do a bit of exercise from time to time, but I never go to a gym! I hate the stuffy and humid environment and prefer to work outdoors at home! So, over the years, I have put up an exercise rack and bought some weights, but I prefer bodyweight exercises for their convenience and lack of equipment needed. Something that you can use to make those exercises more difficult (or more easy) are thick rubber bands. Let’s stretch them over a box and try to roughly tune them! Deep bass sounds!
For some higher pitched sounds? Let’s use the normal stationary rubber bands that almost everyone has lying around to hold things together or keep the sugar bag closed! Hahaha! We can stretch them over an appropriate box as well!
I use a loop pedal to make a simple 3 chord pattern with those homemade instruments, and it turns into a rough cover of “Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a fantastic song that is often covered (John Mayer has done a great version of it!) I hope you enjoy!

I hope that over the weeks I am slowly demonstrating that you don’t need fancy instruments to have fun with music (although it does help!)… I hope some of you play around with these ideas, even if you do it with friends rather than a loop pedal to do several ideas at once! De hecho, se sabe que hago un poco de ejercicio de vez en cuando, ¡pero nunca voy a un gimnasio! ¡Odio el ambiente sofocante y húmedo y prefiero trabajar al aire libre en casa! Entonces, a lo largo de los años, instalé un estante de ejercicios y compré algunas pesas, pero prefiero los ejercicios de peso corporal por su conveniencia y la falta de equipo necesario. hahahaha what genius!!! The truth is that with that loop pedal you can do many fun things, but I have an intrigue: how did you tune the elastic bands in the bass box? 😱
Hahaha - the set-up for the video was a bit longer than the video itself. The normal rubber bands - all I had to do was a bit of shifting on the open side, and the other three sides of the box had enough friction to keep it more or less in tunes.
The tension on the exercise bands (the bass) was much more difficult (you can see the box is nearly breaking!), so I had to tie a knot in each one to at least get it closer, and then shift it again just before I pressed record!
It's just that it looked like the box was screaming for you to set it free hahahahahaha. Crazy, but at least it got the job done. very ingenious 🤜🏼🤛🏼
