Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to my entry for the Music Zone Song Challenge Phase 1! My name is Jasper Dick, and I am singing to you from Cape Town in South Africa!
Now, the whole point of this challenge is that I need to present to you a brand new original song that I have never played in public or uploaded online to places like Hive, Facebook or YouTube!
The truth is I often put first versions of songs online to get feedback, and so I really didn't think I would have anything ready for this Phase 1 (which ends tomorrow). While I am working on a new idea with my friend @clairemobey, we have to actually see each other to finish the first draft!
Luckily I was doodling on my guitar last night and I came up with a riff. After a few times playing it I noticed that the phrase "Freedom, don't give it away" seemed to fit. Then it was off to bed!
Today, a few hours ago, I sat down to pen some verse ideas that would fit the chorus. It seems to be turning into a song about how our freedom of speech is at risk. In my opinion this is leading to a world of "us" and "them"...
If we can have tough, but open and civil, conversations with people who think differently from us, we may learn something new about each other's perspectives and maybe even meet in the middle.
If we can't, that person is just going to makes friends who are even more radical... We land up just calling each other communists and Nazis and getting violent, because we didn't even give diplomacy a chance.
So we need freedom of speech, and with it comes the responsibility to listen with care...

¡Hola damas y caballeros! ¡Bienvenidos a mi entrada para la Fase 1 del Music Zone Song Challenge! ¡Mi nombre es Jasper Dick y les canto desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica!
Ahora, el objetivo de este desafío es que necesito presentarles una nueva canción original que nunca he tocado en público ni subido en línea a lugares como Hive, Facebook o YouTube.
La verdad es que a menudo pongo las primeras versiones de las canciones en línea para recibir comentarios, por lo que realmente no pensé que tendría nada listo para esta Fase 1 (que termina mañana). Mientras trabajo en una nueva idea con mi amiga @clairemobey, ¡tenemos que vernos para terminar el primer borrador!
Por suerte, anoche estaba garabateando en mi guitarra y se me ocurrió un riff. Después de jugarlo unas cuantas veces me di cuenta de que la frase "Libertad, no la regales" parecía encajar. ¡Luego se fue a la cama!
Hoy, hace unas horas, me senté a escribir algunas ideas de versos que encajarían con el estribillo. Parece convertirse en una canción sobre cómo nuestra libertad de expresión está en riesgo. En mi opinión, esto está conduciendo a un mundo de "nosotros" y "ellos"...
Si podemos tener conversaciones duras, pero abiertas y civilizadas, con personas que piensan diferente a nosotros, podemos aprender algo nuevo sobre las perspectivas de los demás y tal vez incluso encontrarnos en el medio.
Si no podemos, esa persona simplemente hará amigos que serán aún más radicales... Terminaremos llamándonos comunistas y nazis y volviéndonos violentos, porque ni siquiera le dimos una oportunidad a la diplomacia.
Así que necesitamos libertad de expresión, y con ella viene la responsabilidad de escuchar con atención...

hello again Jasper, wow your song says a great truth of today's world, how difficult it is to communicate today when there is no coherence or common sense in those who want to impose their ideology, it is increasingly common to see intolerance to those who think differently to what you want to force them to think and have as a way of life, it's crazy, I was very satisfied with your song.

I loved this song my friend. Not only for the sweet melody of the guitar and your voice. The lyrics have a more powerful message. I love songs that with sweet melodies manage to be reactionary and rebellious in their most intimate aspect.

My song here is brand new, and I'm already trying to improve how the verses flow - it should ultimately be closer to the lyrics I've put in a comment... now I'm really getting happy with it, and look forward to trying it out on some more people.

The struggle is immensely great. Freedom is something that many say we have but in reality we are just pawns in a world ruled by mediocre people who do not understand freedom beyond their absurd speeches. There is no freedom if we cannot really say what we think and live. Great song my friend and with a strong message towards truth and freedom.
