Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 41 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival!
After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, I started playing covers after running out of original material. But I thought I would make a special effort for my HMF friends and challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?
And so – this week is the 19th instalment of my series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. This is getting out of hand (hahaha!), so next week’s 20th instalment will be the final one of this nature, before I challenge myself in another way for the Hive Music Festival!
So far, we have had:
- The Kazoo
- The Pennywhistle
- The Autoharp
- The xylophone / glockenspiel
- The Valiha (bamboo zither)
- The ukelele
- The piano sample sounds from the “Bongo Cat” Website
- Random stuff I found in my kitchen
- My toddler daughter’s baby-piano toy and rainstick
- An antique wooden recorder
- 25L Plastic Water drums (remnants of Cape Town’s water crisis)
- Wine bottle whistles!
- Exercise bands and rubber bands
- The washboard
- The handgun
- A mini (tourist-souvenir) kora
- The kalimba (The African Thumb Piano)
- The melodica
Now it is time for the 19th “Instrument of the Week” – The comb (and baking paper)
My first wacky instrument back in Week 23 was the kazoo, a very simple instrument where you hum, and this is magnified and buzzed by a paper-like membrane! What if you want to get a similar sound, but a kazoo is not easy to find?
What our parents and grandparents used to do is play the comb! You take an ordinary comb and cover it with a thin paper like wax-paper, cigarette-paper or baking-paper (in my case). When you press you lips to this combination and hum, you get that buzz in a similar way to a kazoo, especially in the higher register!
Let me use a loop pedal to record the cool guitar riff that separates the verses from the choruses in Bob Marley’s awesome song “I Shot the Sheriff” (also famously covered by Eric Clapton). I can then go over that with the comb and paper. (You will notice I forget to focus on the higher register on my first try and don’t get a distinct buzz, until I go up an octave the next time!)
I then keep that recording and play it between my live guitar playing to get that distinctive pause between the verses and choruses!
Here is the original song:
Thank you so much for tuning in! What weird and wacky instrument will I tackle next week? Remember it will be the last one of this series, before I change track and do a different approach to my Hive Music Festival Entries, so I hope you join me and find out!
Lyrics for "I Shot the Sheriff” by Bob Marley & The Wailers
I shot the sheriff
But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no, oh
I shot the sheriff
But I didn't shoot no deputy, ooh, ooh, ooh
Yeah, all around in my home town
They're trying to track me down, yeah
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy
For the life of a deputy
But I say
Oh, now, now, oh
I shot the sheriff, the sheriff
But I swear it was in self-defense, oh no
Ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah
I say, I shot the sheriff, oh Lord
And they say it is a capital offense, yeah
Ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah
Sheriff John Brown always hated me
For what, I don't know
Every time I plant a seed
He said kill it before it grow
He said kill them before they grow
And so, and so
Read it in the news
I shot the sheriff, oh Lord
But I swear it was in self-defense
Where was the deputy? Ooh, ooh, ooh
I say, I shot the sheriff
But I swear it was in self-defense, yeah
Ooh-ooh
Freedom came my way one day
And I started out of town, yeah
All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown
Aiming to shoot me down
So I shot, I shot, I shot him down and I say
If I am guilty I will pay (pay, pay, pay, pay, pay)
I shot the sheriff
But I say, but I didn't shoot no deputy
I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no, ooh, ooh, ooh
I shot the sheriff, I did
But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Reflexes had the better of me
And what is to be must be
Every day the bucket a-go a well
One day the bottom a-go drop out
One day the bottom a-go drop out
I say
I-I-I, I shot the sheriff
Lord, I didn't shot the deputy, no
Yeah, I-I shot the sheriff
But I didn't shoot no deputy, yeah, so, yeah

Letra de "I Shot the Sheriff" de Bob Marley & The Wailers
Si soy culpable voy a pagar (pagar, pagar, pagar, pagar, pagar)
oh, oh, oh
Los reflejos tenían lo mejor de mí
Y lo que ha de ser debe ser
Todos los días el balde va bien
Un día, el fondo a-go abandona
Un día, el fondo a-go abandona
yo digo

Dude, what a COOL plan!!! I enjoy doing a lot of experimental stuff as well (I post these things from my less formal account, @albuslucimus) - but so far I have not touched nearly the variety you have here, this is quite impressive!!!
Very cool - thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks mate.
you are one of the most creative and talented musicians in the hive community, listening to you is always a learning adventure, thank you for continuing to shine and for striving every week to give the best of yourself.
Brother, creating musical content is hard enough... And composing songs a lot, you are an artist my dear friend! I congratulate you for your beautiful dedication to the musical art, God continue to bless you brother a big hug for you! ♥
You have such an amazing voice, You truly must have been blessed with the voice.
This is my first time seeing you and I’m moved by your voice. It’s soothing to my ears.

My previous @v4vapp proposal has expired. I have a new one which is running but unfunded right now. I'm still running @v4vapp and all my other services.
I've just updated v4v.app and I'm getting ready for some exciting new features after the next hard fork.
Please consider asking your friends to vote for prop #265 or consider unvoting the return vote.
For understandable reasons in the current crypto climate it is harder to get funded by the DHF, I accept this so I'm asking a wider audience for help again. I'll also add that I power up Hive every day and usually power up larger amounts on 1st of the Month. I'm on Hive for ideological reasons much more than for only economic benefit.
Additionally you can also help with a vote for Brianoflondon's Witness using KeyChain or HiveSigner
If you have used v4v.app I'd really like to hear your feedback, and if you haven't I'd be happy to hear why or whether there are other things you want it to do.
A dynamic, fun, and classic presentation. We congratulate you on the excellent interpretation. It's always nice to know what flashy sound will accompany you. We congratulate you on your creativity. Thank you for sharing your performance at the Hive Music Festival. Your post was reviewed by us and received an upvote from the Music Zone community on Hive. Join us on our server Discord!
Good heavens that's crazy! Love it!! Damn. You are nuts, but it works hey!
