Exactly 21 days ago I published in this community a donation I had received of old analog photographic material. In that post I focused on photographic paper, and today I'm presenting the film that was given to me on that occasion. More specifically, glass Plates/Platen/Plaques.
Glass plates appeared as a common support medium for photographic negatives in the mid-19th century. Black and white photographic films are made of fine silver particles (or colored dyes for color negatives), which are embedded in a thin layer. The emulsion is formed by the combination of the silver particles and the image substance.
The emulsion layer rests on what is called a support, which can be paper, film or, in this case, glass. The glass plate is surrounded by a photographic emulsion where, through exposure to light, an image is formed. The important part of the photographic process is fixing, which is used to wash away the silver particles that are not part of the image, producing a fixed negative image. This negative image can be used for many years to produce proofs on paper.
Glass plates as a form of support were widely used between 1851 and 1920, according to the book “Developed Photography and Glass Negatives AGFA Early 20th Century”.
As this box was already veiled (damaged), I decided to show you the inside of the plates. The film (here in gray) is between two glass plates.
An example of developing a plate, here the film is negative (left) and turned positive (right).

A little history of the Ilford plates.
Information on development times provided on the inside of the box.
July 1977 😲
Kodak film. Curiosity in the price, still in the old Portuguese currency (Escudo). It is now equivalent to around € 2.15
Useful information about this photographic plates.
This price, 67 escudos (old Portuguese currency). Now about 35 centimes.
This box, although a little damaged on the outside, has never been opened. And it never will be. I'll keep it like a Bitcoin.

Oh, what a nostalgia. I took classes on this type of camera in college, it's the next level after the daguerreotype if I'm not mistaken.
