I'm not going to pretend that I care how rarely I write here nowadays so let's just say that this is my very own, just perfect writing frequency. I have not given up on Hive, I have not left so I'm not coming back, this is just how I do things.
I've taken so many photos, mostly because I want to but also because I'm desperately trying to come up with an idea to my upcoming exhibition sometime spring 2025. Me and my fine photography class mates are supposed to apply for a gallery this spring although most of us have no idea what we're going to show there. Me included. I have no idea. Zero. Nolla ideaa. My head is empty. I'm kinda thinking photos taken with old cameras but that shouldn't be the only thing so I need to think of something else too. Or something else entirely. But there's too many options so to me that's not an option. I need help.
But let's get back to the same old things I've posted about so many times before. Old film cameras and crappy photos taken with them.
Agfa Billy - CineStill Double-X
I love folding cameras. It doesn't matter if they're quite big, they still are pocket sized cameras, depending of course how deep your pockets are. And this didn't even cost me that much! So you don't have to worry about the camera being too thick and not fitting, the camera parts damaging if it rolls around in your bag or if there's something else in your pocket too, or the lens getting dirt on it. But when you open it, you get a big camera (unless it's a small folding camera which of course is small after you open it) and instantly feel like a professional photographer from the 1950's or 1900's. Tiny, beautiful mechanical parts that most certainly are not designed all rounded like all modern gadgets are.
Unfortunately this one had a light leak, a hole that I didn't notice before I used the camera even though I though I checked it but obviously didn't, so almost all the photos had really bad light leaks that there really isn't anything to show to you. All except these two. One double exposure taken inside and the other taken at night. No light leaks because there barely was any light anyway.
If I remember correctly this was one of the cameras I bought from Kamerastore outlet so the price is two cases of cameras (perhaps 20 or 30 or 40 pieces) for 40 euros. Let's say it's 2 euros per camera.
Two crappy photos that aren't not that bad. Still I'm kinda bummed that I wasted one of my CineStills to this camera.
Canon IXUS AF-S - Konica Centuria APS 200
This was a weird find.
I got a bunch of expired APS films for free as I said to the person who gave the films to me that I think I have an APS camera. Well, I didn't. I remembered that I have but I din't. So few days or few weeks after getting the films I went to a flea market trip to Hämeenlinna, which is a nearby city, looking for an APS camera and what do you know, I found one! Cheap, working and in pristine condition which was quite weird because after that one time I've never seen another APS camera in any or the second hand shops or flea markets I've been in. And it's been a while. Almost a year now.
But sometimes magical things happen.
...aaaaand sometimes not so magical things.
As the camera is all automatic I have no way overexposing the photos. Not with this camera. So this is what happens with old color film that has been stored who knows how and used in a camera that doesn't know that the film is old. And these were the best photos of all that 24 frame roll.
Well, at least I know the camera is working.
Konica Revio - Kodak Advantix Ultra APS 200
What! Another APS camera. And this one was free! Nothing is ever free.
I got it from the same person who gave me the APS films but of course only after I had found the Canon IXUS. But nevertheless, I welcome all kind of crappy cameras, especially if they are free or really cheap, and films too, and block the fact from my mind that it's not the camera or the film that's going to cost me. It's the developing and especially the scanning with professional equipment that's going to make me poor. But who cares, I can always wear old clothes just a little bit longer, eat some other day and walk without shoes, especially in the winter time when it's -20°C. As long as I have my cameras, films and am able to get the films developed and scanned. Nothing else matters!
I almost forgot to tell you that the batteries to the APS cameras are quite costly. It needs two kinds of batteries. The bigger one is 8€ and the button battery is something like 1 to 2€. So not a free camera in the end after all.
Anyway, I'm not going to add that to the "what did all this cost me" part so I can pretend that the batteries were free.
I had different film in this on than the IXUS and also this camera had a +1 function that is meant to be used for instance when taking photos towards the sun so that the camera overexposes the target but I used it all the time so I got better results because of those two things I guess.
I really like the winter photos but I also like the tunnel photo.
Let's hope my next post will be this year. :D
What did all this cost me?
Agfa Billy: 2€, Canon IXUS AF-S: 4,90€, Konica Revio: 0€
CineStill: 13,99€, Konica Centuria APS 200: 0€, Kodak Advantix Ultra APS 200: 0€
Film developing: 17,90€ + 12,90€ + 12,90€
Film scanning to TIFF: 20€ + 20€ + 20€
As usual I've done nothing to the photos. Few of them might be better if post-processed but as I want to show you what kind of results does this camera and this film give in different conditions, I've left them as they are and I'll show you the photos with all of mine and the cameras flaws in the pictures.
