Good day fellow Hivers.
Yesterday i was contacted by Melis, who i met at the Rainbow gathering in Macedonia last year, asking if she could come to stay for a while in a couple of months time. So, i'm looking forward to her visit. In the meantime it looks like i'll have two more volunteers arrivig in a week or two.
i offer work exchange stays at my home Atmanna, which is part of the Ananda Bulgaria community village which @spiritual.face and i are slowly creating here in #Bulgaria. Spring has well and truly arrived and there's lots of work to do in the garden at the moment so i'm happy we have help due to arrive soon.
Anyway, today i noticed how well the Melissa (also known as lemon balm) was growing in my #garden (hence the post title), so decided to harvest some.
i pulled up some of the grass/weeds crowded around it to give it some space, and so it was easier for me too harvest the leaves.
Melissa is known as a genus of perennial herbs, native to Asia and Europe, but it is cultivated in many other places. The name Melissa is taken from the Greek word “mélissa” due to the abundance of nectar in its flowers.
It seems that Melissa offers many health benefits, including:
Melissa herb can help all of the systems properly function. It works as a tonic that can help keep everything in order and simultaneously boost the immunity. This herb has antibacterial and antiviral properties, so it can help you treat some infections caused by viruses. Actually, boosting the immunity is one of the health benefits of Melissa herb that you should consider making use for good.
Melissa grows wild in my garden :-), there are several plants on both sides of the house) dropping seeds around them and growing new plants the following year. Here's a smaller one growing about a metre away from the big one pictured above which i harvested from:
So, i picked a big handful of leaves from one of the plants rinsed them in cold water, then patted with a (26 year old) tea-towel to remove most of the water.
i then removed the stems and placed them (without overlapping) on trays from the dehydrator machine i've had for a couple of years. It works very well, and i don't think it uses much electricity.
They didn't all fit on the trays so i made a pot of tea with the rest.
i placed the trays on the dryer, underneath some sprouted lentil, chick pea & Limetz crackers (recipe to follow in another post) and some Raw Hemp & Oat Chocolate Cookies (recipe here) which i made earlier today.
Be sure to check out the raw cookie recipe. They are delicious :-)
i will store the dried Melissa leaves in a glass jar for making tea when there's none available in the garden.
i also have a non-electric dehydrator hanging on my balcony. i guess it would take a several days to dry them, depending on the weather , and probably need to bring inside overnight.
Another alternative if you don't have either, for the cookies and crackers, could be to at a very low temperature in an oven with door open. Should be under 115° F to be considered raw i think. I would definitely not place the Melissa in the oven though!

This is really cool! I love being able to eat right out of the garden, but this takes the cake ;)
I especially like the informative approach you’ve taken here - I feel like, with this, I would be confident in preparing Melissa myself :)
I have one of those hanging drying racks, so good. Lemon balm is so amazing, wish it held its scent when dried! I make a lemon balm, chamomile, tulsi, lavender tea - mainly as they all end up drying in the rack in a big jumble together ahah! Instamix!
I love melissa so much =D
lovely stuff!
Thank you.

I hope the start of the summer season is going all right over there...
We've been working on the garden hard...
A lot of crickets, snails, ants, and a few more animal species are messing with us here :)
Namaste :)

Yeah, going well thanks bro.
i've not put that much in the ground yet, but plenty of big seedlings ready now to move outside from house and greenhouse. Eating self seeded lettuces from last year though, and still eating last years apples from the cellar!
i see a few snails and re-locate them. Ants are good for pollination!
