Why I grow alfalfa

I was a container gardener with limited space and resources for about 5 years. However 2 years ago I bought a home and finally have a yard to do with as I please. Last year I built a Hugelkultur bed and this year I made most of my remaining back yard into a small garden.

I am a very strict organic grower, a natural farming practitioner without the farm. I make my own Korean natural farming inputs, compost, bokashi and have a small worm farm setup. I take knowledge from many different practices in hopes of one day implementing them on a farm of my own.

So, alfalfa. I was looking for a fast growing perennial that is nitrogen fixing. Something I could cut and use to beef up my compost. There are many plants that fit that description but I chose alfalfa.

The small white balls on the roots is naturally formed nitrogen, the best kind of nitrogen your plants can get. I don't normally pull the plant out I cut them and let them grow back.

I also love the flowers on these plants. I didn't let them get this far last year but decided to let them go. I am glad I did.

There are health benefits too but that is up to you as an individual to look into and decide. What I can say is that having a morning coffee and looking at these beautiful flowers is a great start to the day.

Thanks for reading folks.
