The Beginnings of My Polytunnel - A Dream Come True!

in Natural Medicine4 years ago

I'm really, really mad at the rain. I am trying not to be, because she's lovely, really, and I'm thrilled that she's watering in the fifty trees we planted - but I want the sun to come out to warm the polytunnel plastic so we can stretch it over the frame and get it done. I've run out of room in my mini greenhouse and I want to sow, sow, sow!!!! Plus, it'd be nice to have a warm room to hang out in - Victoria is freezing at the moment, and that's not just because our state premier has frozen everyone's hearts by trying to extend the State of Disaster for another year.

I wanted to create a video of us building it but it's been so stop start because of the rain and wind. Here's a taster anyway of what we've achieved so far.

We had the pipe already from a free find, and some metal rods, so that gave us the basic frame work. The rest is less than 500 bucks worth of materials, including the wood, screws and two second hand door frames, and the auto opening vents I got off ebay AND the weed matting for the floor.

I'm so, so excited - I've wanted a polytunnel for so long! I plan on growing vegetable seeds in there, but also tomatoes in tubs and eggplants, and maybe even ginger or turmeric in the beds - at very least, some winter veggies. A mate of mine has some huge polytunnels he grows natives in, so he's been giving us lots of tips - but it's pretty straightforward if you know how to get things basically square, and some cross bracing for support.

Of course, I'll be sure to update you with the finished product soon.

Do you have a polytunnel? Or perhaps a green house? Drop some photos below so I can drool over them!

With Love,

Thanks man!!! We think so...

Looks pretty good...I haven't got a polytunnel but I've had a few Polywaffles in my day...Not the same, but made me as happy as polytunnel's seem to make you! Lol.

Seriously though, it's looking pretty nice. How long will it take to complete?

Oh we will get it done in a day when the weather warms up in a few days!!! Ooh crunch AAAH .. that was polywaffle right??

That's right...I heard they're bringing it back...The Polywaffle. ✅

It's ironic, we want the rain over here to actually fall and the excessive sun to stop generally. I'm guessing you plan to plant majorly vegetables at the most? I'll be waiting for the progress. Planting can be a hassle but fun.

It's rewarding yes!! Mainly vegetables that's right. Perhaps something I can't grow usually like turmeric!! I'm pretty excited xx

Awesome, I've always wanted one too, maybe this time next year!

Maybe you could work on an irrigation system in the meantime?

I've been hassling Jamie re irrigation! But we have so many things on go I have to wait til he's at a loose end or he feels guilty for abandoning me haha... Do you think you might get one in Portugal??

I don't know if I'll even need one in Portugal. I haven't even researched what grows out there, I'm saving all that until I've finally got some land.

This is a very good project but as for the rain you cannot stop it at the moment it is very on stoppable that is why you as a farmer you need to take very conversant of the rain before and after so as not to damage your crop. Here in ilorin town, the wind will blow for more than 45 minutes before the rain start you can imagine what damage it would have cause the planted crops but notwitstanding we are managing it as it is and doing great. Good to see your polytunnel. I always dream to have this kind of thing as well but I have no space for it for now maybe later in the year I will.

Yes, well I am really happy for the rain REALLY . It's helping my trees grow!!! I hope you can get a Poly tunnel soon..

Yes I'm working on how to get more large plot of land for a very great farming activities to commence. Here where i reside it's full of rocky blocks all over unless I go to extreme rural settlement for them to lease plot of land for me. I'm working on it though.

Oh, man! You got your dream! It's been a dream of mine to have one for decades! Maybe some day....

I know right!!! It took some begging and sooking to get Jamie to start, but because of all that time spent on Landie, he had to balance out the score!!! Not expensive to make, but you just can't get the labourer 😂😂😂😂

:))

I'm glad he came through and you've got a nice growing space. :))

Good job

Thanks!

Amazing, I also have the same dream hahaha

I feel like the polytunnel is many people's dream!!! I hope one day it comes true!!!

Those look lovely. I won't mind to own one

I want make like that for a long time. Oh so lovely 🌱🌱🌱🌱

Thanks .. it will be SO lovely.. especially in winter here when it's freezing outside!!!!

This is one of my dreams. Im a lover of tropical gardens. Im in south Carolina and we got tons of heat and humidity. But in winter we get occasional frosts. I've been thinking of building a greenhouse exactly like this! In it i will continue my hobby of collecting plumeria strains, heliconia and gingers. Put a fold out table, my lap top in the center and do my Hiveing in a tropical paradise

Oh yeah a good out table will feature for sure!!! I wonder if my Wi-Fi will reach that far... haha. Definitely it's going to be a chill place. Especially in cold winters!!!!! I think we have very similiar climate to you.

My climate is similar. I plan to make it my hive headquarters. Surrounded by tropical flowers and posting away. I am following you to see how the greenhouse turns out

Wow, how beautiful! Now we are closer to working with earth, all the energies are set so that we can return little by little to the essential, to recover the peace that was lost in the world.
I am very happy to see so many beautiful vibes . Adiwa!

I built several of these things on various illegal ganja farms in Oregon. "Hoop houses" is what I've heard them called in the USA, but I love how OZ always has unique and different names for everything.

I learned "esky" for the first time in Cambodia.

Oh yeah I heard they were called hoop houses!!! Makes sense. Oh I always like to confuse Americans with Aussie lingo. It's one of my favourite HIVE pastimes.

Looks like you're gonna have a lot of fun with the polytunnel!

Oh yeah so excited!!! I am hoping chilli will do better in there and I can try turmeric or ginger!!!

I live in an apartment so I do not have a place to put a poly-tunnel. I am going to do some research on growing plants indoors.

As fat as I am I really must start eating more vegetables. I have heard they fill you up more and are good for fiber. I do eat a great many beans though, all kinds!

Beans, beans they're good for your heart.
The more you eat the more you fart.
The more you fart, the better you feel.
So, eat some beans at every meal!

It is good that I live alone.

Haha, love that rhyme. My husband's English, so baked beans are an absolute staple here. Lucky he married me so I introduced some greens too - he was shocked when I put spinach and parsley iin his beans once, haha!!!! Do you have a balcony?

No. I do not have a balcony, but a very small "stoop" which is in the shade most of the day.

I just saw one of these for the first time on YouTube and wondered if it’s possible for a normal person (someone who isn’t trying to do urban acre to market stuff). Yes! Now I just need a garden big enough, materials and a labourer...we seem to have the sun part this week

 4 years ago (edited)

ha, yeah you'd be warmer up there anyway!! You'd probably need a shade tunnel!

Beautiful to see!

500 bucks sounds like a lot though.

What would you say is the advantage to building one over buying a flat packed one for half the price? And how long do you think it will take to construct?

Here is how to clutter up your greenhouse...

I want one of those too, so excited for you all 🤗
