Using The Whole Deer

It's a blessing to process an animal in community, and creating beauty

Hello again everyone,

Just really wanted share the excitment of this past weekend with you all. I'm writing this post while on a break at work, on my phone!!!

As some of you know I have been for quite some time now, on a rewilding journey. It's guided me towards so many different rabbit holes to jump into, there are too many to list right here, right now. That being said, one of these rabbit holes, is that of food and nutrition.

What is The Human Diet

When it comes to diving into this subject, let's look at the most important things that comes to mind:

1. Cleanliness of the food we eat
2. Hunting

Now, both of these subjects have their respected rabbit holes to explore, but they are also very closely related. Let's look at ourselves having been around for about 300,000 years, and agriculture started rouhhly 12,000 years ago. Since we figured out how to domesticate plants, and animals our lifestyles changed. Over time it changed exponentially faster,so fast that our own physical evolution can't seem to keep up with it.

Today we don't truly know which "human diet" is best for us. The only generational knowledge we can draw from comes from the ages predating the invent of farming.

Perhaps it's not entirely true. We can also look at ourselves starting with the first domestication of plants and animals to present day. When comparing these two periods, it would seem as though the human species, as we know it is going through a sort of degenerative evolution that can be pinpointed to the last 12,000 years.

Durring our earliest period which lasted almost 30 times longer, we were strong, resiliant, wise, and for the most part without modern day problems such as arthritis, heart disease, or tooth decay.

I can keep going deeper, like I said this is a rabbit hole to dive into, and it seems so far to be bottomless... we know so little about ourselves, it's a bit presumptuous to think we do. We keep evolving, sometimes probably not fast enough to keep up with our own fight for the survival of our species, but the fact remains we don't know what we're supposed to eat!

With the data presented of our biological history, what makes the most sense for me is to go with the idea that a hunter gather diet is best for my person. That means eating "clean" meat, vegetables, and dairy.

That's where hunting comes into play. The cleanest meat you'll ever have the chance to eat is that of a wild animal that eats only what it instincly and naturally knows to eat.

The weekend that was so exciting, was two days full of learning, meeting like minded people, and being outside in community, around a fire while it was close to freezing.

Resiliance, togetherness, and learning skills.

I'm writing about the class in details, and will post it in the sooniverse, that I promise. Because when you learn something, it is of great benefit, for the self and others, to teach what you've learned. The next step will be to practice my new skills in order to embody the knowledge.

Be warned, there will be some gruesome pictures of animals that have been killed for this purpose, along with road kill being used for the sake of learning.

It's always sad when a life is taken, and it's a shame most of the time we do not to use the entire animal.

This weekend taught me just that, and in a hunter gatherer village or group setting, a hunted animal became energy in the form of food, garments, tools, and decorative elements. Nothing was ever wasted

I walked away from this class with a deeper understanding and importance of respect for the ecosystem we're à part of. Once again I want to show my gratitude for my family who was able to give me this wonderfull birthday gift I will keep with me for ever.

Keep on learning, keep on sharing!
