Hello Everyone,
The Thai Termite Mushroom is a scarce mushroom that can only usually be found in the rare rainy season in the mountains and other remote areas.

There are many types of mushrooms all over the country, but Thai people have found the Termite Mushroom to be one of the best tasting, so when it is available it makes people very happy.
ประเทศไทย มีเห็ดหลายชนิด แต่มีเห็ดโคนนี่ อร่อยที่สุดและทำให้ทุกคนมีความสุขเมื่อได้พบและเก็บเอามากินและเหลือกิน ก็ขายในราคาที่สูง
They usually only appear once a year if you are lucky enough to find them. They are so prized that are given to people as a special offering. Usually around October and in remote areas, the Termite Mushroom might be found for harvest. It really is a treat if they are found during other months of the year.เห็ดโคนมันจะขึ้นปีละครั้ง เมื่อสองวันก่อน ก็ถือว่า ลุงกับน้าเขาโชคดีที่ได้พบเจอ แต่มันก็ยังขึ้นไม่เยอะเท่าไหร่ ลุงบอกว่า ถ้าฝนลงอีกสักวันสองวัน คงจะขึ้นเยอะแน่ๆ ปกติแล้ว เห็ดโคนมันจะขึ้นประมาณเดือนตุลาคม แน่ปีนี้มันจะขึ้นเร็วกว่าปกติของปี
My family loves it when they are lucky enough to find and enjoy in their soup. I remember my grandmother would be so happy have luck to find this mushroom for her family.

It's the combination of heat and rain during this time that the Termite Mushroom loves.
The mushrooms must be cleaned very well and carefully. The taste is what makes the Termite Mushroom so special and such a treat. Believe it or not, the Termite Mushroom get's it name from it special cultivation and help from the termites.
Tom Yam Soup with the Termite Mushroom is even more delicious. The soup has it's own taste and the healthy Termite Mushroom adds a lite sweet flavor.

There are so many wonderful edible mushrooms out there...but we really need to be careful in identifying and picking these wonderful mushrooms. Congrats to you!
I SOOO MUCH want to learn more about Thai mushrooms! I often travel and work in the mountains between Mae Sariang and Mae Salit (Burmese border) and the wild mushrooms there are EVERYWHERE. Any suggestions of how to do that when my Thai reading is CRAP? LOL? Is there a mushroom guru that you know of? I SPEAK Thai (and northern Thai) more than well enough to learn and could take my own notes in English.
I had no idea these mushrooms are symbiotic with termites but it makes sense that termites have a place in the ecology here and not just for eating Thai houses.
Following you and hoping to learn so much more about Thai nature and Thai medicine from you.
My daughter, Ploi, also just started on Hive. @ploimrt Maybe you could give her a follow and some encouragement? She reads and writes korean (Miss Kpop) as well as being 100% bilingual. It would be great with her to see and meet some other Thai people on Hive. 😊
Sounds good...I will follow and reach out to her. Thank you for your comments. I would say the Thai locals are the ones to go to for mushroom location and species. They are very skilled at finding and brokering these special mushrooms that are rare indeed. They know and if you are looking for a specific mushroom or remedy they know from experience :-)
