The Chimó, tobacco, ancestry and its history // El Chimó, tabaco, ancestralidad y su historia

ENG

Here I am again, friends, to share with you a wonderful plant, which for decades has been poisoned and turned into a harmful product for health, which has demonized and generated a worldwide campaign of loss of its real uses, its benefits and also its history as many other important plants in our world.

The tobacco, or scientifically called Nicotiana Tabacum, is a plant that is original of the tropical America, they say that it can be its origin between Venezuela, the Caribbean islands and Mexico, but specifically in the peninsula of Yucatan and the south of that country.

Used ancestrally by the indigenous people of the Americas, it is a power plant that is used from the Native Americans of the north (Lakota, Hopi, Apache, Cherokee, Navajo, etc) to the center and south of the continent (Mexicas, Aztecas, Mayas, Piaroa, Ingas, Cofán, Aymara, Guaraní, Kaxinawá, etc), for a very wide diversity of uses and ceremonies. Being used to communicate between the material and higher worlds, it serves for vision but also to be in a state of trance. It also has several alkaloids that are used therapeutically, among the effects are that it stimulates the ganglionic system, the central nervous system, as well as being used with other herbs to treat infections. It is also used as an incecticide in plantations.

Specifically, Chimó is a cured tobacco paste, which has a process that turns it into a jelly, very similar to toothpaste, and has a dark brown or black color. The story comes from the Venezuelan Andes, more specifically from the Urao Lagoon in the state of Merida. There the indigenous people went to the bottom of the lagoon where there were salt rocks that they used later to make the mixture with the tobacco that was already dried and cooked several times, where it was pulverized and integrated with dry banana peels to make the substance.

It is worth mentioning a very curious and historically important fact: when Christopher Columbus arrived at the Venezuelan coast, he received this substance from the natives as a gift, which he received in 1492.

The taste of Chimó is spicy and has the smell of lye and depending on the manufacturer it can be quite soft or hard in texture, as well as there are differences in the concentration of tobacco that makes it more or less strong in its effects. Among the brands and products known are the Tigrito, Apureñito, Guanarito, Scorpion, Andinito, Buffalo among others.

It is also worth mentioning the properties and benefits that have to do with dentistry and the mouth. If we look for the official information it says that it produces cancer of mouth and injuries, nevertheless it is necessary to emphasize that the use of any substance of abusive form generates harmful effects in the body. If we were to drink more water than our body can accommodate for sure something bad would happen in the body, the same happens with food, any plant or substance that we use even if they have differences. This is where I set aside my experience and my vision of how to use this plant in a reasonable, logical and wise way.

According to a friend of mine who is a dentist, the Chimó avoids the accumulation of cavities in the corners and hidden parts of the teeth since the substance falls on these surfaces, and the bacteria that generate tartar do not survive in these areas. This is not being said by an oral health specialist. It is worth mentioning that my experience is the same since I have never had tartar since I started using it, my teeth are clean and I used to suffer from it even though I always had good oral hygiene.

I use the chimó some days of the week and at most two or three pellets (chimó pellets). The chimó is chewed but not swallowed and should only be spat out, allowing the mouth to dissolve the contents of the tobacco and gradually the mouth to absorb its properties. Tobacco, just like any other plant, is not a game. It is something that owes our respect, whether it is chewed, smoked or ingested. The ancestral use is in line with this thought and we should never get out of those values since it is not something recreational, but is for ceremonial, medicinal and occasional use. This is important because more than one will be carried away by the information provided by the internet due to the unconscious abuse that is used in these substances, which obviously will not be good for the human body.

In conclusion I leave you with other medicines that here in Venezuela are consumed and are part of the book of plants that we can use correctly for our benefit, I know of similar products in the United States and Canada where they sell chewing tobacco paste, so those who have the opportunity to use it, I recommend them.

So much information I didn't know, yet I've used tobacco since I've been 12 years old. Too bad it's so addicting.😀 Thanks for sharing, my friend.

Hi @naturalmedicine and @notconvinced for the appreciation, really love the share with this awesome community!

For me tobacco has not been adictive is really how we used it and what product too, beacuse there are a lot of tobacco products that have other substances too.

Let´s continue sharing thanks!!!

I enjoy growing flowering tobacco in my garden. It is a very beneficial companion plant I have learned, and a great insecticide.

Never knew it could be helpful in oral hygiene. Surely, this kind of information has been repressed for many years.

@creativeruth yes indeed tobacco has been demonized for too many years since the big companies transforms tobacco into cigarettes, putting poison in it.

We need to restore and re-discover our world and the plants. Cheers!

Today I was just reading all about George Washington, and how he had teeth problems in his young adult life. I don't know if he used tobacco or not, but from the sound of it he tried everything and had access to the finest dentists and doctors, and his teeth still rotted away until he had to use full dentures. As renowned as he was with his knowledge of plants and fruits he grew at his Mt. Vernon estate, there was, and is, still a lot we don't fully understand about medicine.
