Momordica Charantia or bitter melon is a vines or climbing with tendrils, growing wild in the bushes in our place (Aceh), can be consumed for vegetables.
Scientists specializing of botany or phytologist, have conducted studies and experiments for Momordica Charantia related to the benefits of medicine.
In a journal published online by the US National Library of Medicine - National Institutes of Health, entitled: "Effect of Momordica charantia fruit extract on vascular complication in type 1 diabetic rats", concluded:
From the present findings, it was observed that the administration with Momordica Charantia fruit extract for 28 days improved the vascular complication by decreasing the blood pressure, serum total cholesterol, triglyceride levels, aortic tissue MDA level and increasing aortic tissue NO level in type 1 diabetic rat model. These results were confirmed by the tissue histomorphometery, immunohistochemistry (eNOS expression) and histological analysis. In addition, the results of the Momordica Charantia fruit extract were in accordance with an oral hypoglycaemic agent, metformin. Our results are a key to establish the scientific foundation of Momordica Charantia fruit in improving the diabetic vascular complication. Further investigations in determining the mechanism of action of the Momordica Charantia fruit extract in the treatment of vascular complications arising due to diabetes mellitus are required.
