Social Media on a Decentralized Blockchain and Portals (Websites) to View it.
Reading through content on Hive today - using portals like Ecency, Political Hive, and PeakD - it occurred to be there was less overtly libertarian content, or perhaps less content related to the Libertarian Party than I expected. Because Hive is a decentralized blockchain, all content stored on chain is implicitly libertarian in nature. HIVE is roughly a distributed database that is hosted and mirrored all across the world on servers called witnesses. Every three seconds a new payload of data is written to the HIVE blockchain, the structure containing that data is called a block. When we browse a website built on Hive, the the data stored on the chain is structured organized to give it the appearance of a readily identifiable blog or social media ppost. In the image below is a "Snap" on PeakD.com - little different in appearance than a Tweet on X.com
LIBERTARIAN-ish?
Clicking over to the Libertarian Party (United States) webpage I was curious to see what their platform or positions were on decentralization. What immediately jumped out at me was their selection of social media platforms, ironically positioned underneath the "OUR PLATFORM" banner- Facebook, X(Twitter), Instagram, Youtube, and TikTok. All centralized social media platforms, none of which give ownership of speech to the individuals creating it. Now on a pragmatic level this makes sense, these platforms are where many American go to discuss politics, economic, news - it is reasonable to go to where the discussions are.
Dont't Forget About Bitcoins!
The Libertarian Party though is presenting itself as an alternative option. It is moderately ironic that Libertarians don't have larger presences on decentralized platforms. To create a viable alternative, some alternative tools and infrastructure must be built and sustained. Libertarians have certainly had some association with blockchain technologies, in the form of cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin. In January 22, the Libertarian Party reminded its audience on X.com - "Don't forget you can also donate in Bitcoin Now."
HIVE is the Solution
Using the Hive Blockchain is the natural solution. It is a decentralized, and fee-less network. The learning curve is slightly higher than legacy social media, but not daunting. Account creation can be done through a variety of methods. This may be perhaps one of the simultaneous weakness and strengths of Hive. There are many onramps to Hive, and many portals to access the data (content) stored on the chain - the breadth of options may be a barrier to some potential users.
GET ON HIVE
https://signup.hive.io/ is the best place to start.
A significant strength of Hive is that because it is a decentralized blockchain the content stored there as data is substantially censorship resistant. Longform textual content can be stored on Hive and then referenced or linked on legacy social media. Discussion of that content can occur simultaneously on Hive,X.com and other legacy social media platforms.
It is certainly good to recommend Hive, because it seems appropriate in the Libertarian context.
But there's always the nagging issue of effectiveness vs. ideology. Centralized social media currently has a potential reach of hundreds of millions while the Hive ecosystem reaches tens of thousands on a good day... one of the reasons why Hive typically is of little interest to larger "influencer" types.
Still, who knows? Maybe having Hive as an added icon on their social media panel is within the realm of possibility... particularly if one of Hive's many Libertarians were to offer to manage the Hive account for them...
