Flour Water Salt: South Nowra, AUSTRALIA

Flour Water Salt: South Nowra, AUSTRALIA.jpg

We were recently in the Shoalhaven and Jervis Bay area for a very rare family holiday (more posts on that coming up soon!), and we were in the Nowra area and looking for a late lunch or an early afternoon snack.

A quick googling around showed us that Flour Water Salt was highly recommended... and so, we made a beeline for this highly regarded bakery.

... and as we were driving in... well, it appears that it was in an unexpectedly light industrial area. Well, that wasn't such a bad thing... when we lived in the Netherlands, the best French bakery in our area was housed in the light industrial area... well, that was were the breads were made and then shipped out to the various cafes and bakery fronts.

The Space

Yep... this was definitely the place where the goods were being made! Some outdoor seating, and a handful of indoor tables as well.... but you could tell that it was set up more as a takeaway or large order pickup instead of a sit down cafe. Still, there were some places to sit down and eat and drink.

The Food

Leading off the bakery goodies was this Creamy Chicken and Leek pie that my older girl ordered. This was amazing, and the pastry... wow, light and crispy... and unlike other lesser varieties... not crazily oily.

... and the same for the sausage roll that I had got myself. I often find these too oily after a few bites... but this was awesome! And the filling as well... I think this is the best sausage roll that I've ever had!

An Aussie style meat pie for my youngest... again, top filling. Sort of more like a Bolognese sauce than the dark gristly stuff that normally fills these things. Personally, I prefer the chunky versions... but the red wine and beef was sold out already.

... and a mushroom Quiche for my wife... again, just a perfect baked good! Even if quiches aren't my thing...

And the flat white coffees... again, roasted on site, and done to perfection! Perfect taste, just the right temperature, and not too milky.

A Strawberry Iced Matcha for my daughters... it was pretty decent, and a iced matcha works wonders on a hot Australian summer day! I'm a bit mixed on the matcha taste... I do like it in small doses, but for a full drink... not so much, but my girls love it.

... and to top it all off, two little treats to finish off with. A Passionfruit melting moment and a caramel slice... and again, stunning creations to share! And not too sweet either... which is an Australian (and American...) thing... sweets that are too sugary sweet.

The Experience

Well, we were expecting some nice food here thanks to the reviews of the locals. But wow, this place knocked our socks (and taste buds...) off! Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area... one of the best bakeries that we have EVER VISITED!

Australian style bread looks delicious. Totally provocative. Definitely a good place for a light meal. Of course, depending on one's diet hehehehehe.

I liked the coffee. I'm team coffee.

Perfect for an afternoon snack/late lunch! Coffee was awesome... I'm also team coffee!

Those look like some interesting dishes. I think I would have eaten any of them. I like the name of the place too. Very simple, but trendy at the same time!

Yeah, all the choices were pretty intriguing... and then there were the sandwiches that we didn't end up getting... and a whole row of desserts as well!

Sounds scrumptious!

Nice! I have some relatives working in Australia. I'll let them know about this place if they get somewhere over that side of the continent. All the best in your food ventures !BBH

Ah yes, definitely worth a visit... but Australia is pretty huge!
