So, yesterday I had a few German friends over for dinner. I made them a classic Swedish Layered Sandwich Cake (Swedish: Smörgåstårta). This is a true beast and it sounds weird, but tastes delicious.
So, what's in it? Well, the base is four layers of white bread, mayo and creme fraiche. Then with three layers of filling, the first one is shrimps and cheese, the second one liver paste with pickled cucumber and the third one is ham, cheese and eggs. Toppings includes all of the above together with smoked salmon, grapes, dill, cucumber, lemon and tomatoes.
It's a true calorie bomb and we don't eat it often. In Sweden it's typical for confirmation, baptism and funerals. Also sometimes after business or assocation meetings.
The cake above is approximately 18 servings. We were five adults and two kids and we almost managed half of it. But hey, who says you can't eat it two days in a row?
never heard of this, looks so good besides the shrimps (I don't like them lol) thanks for sharing :)
Me neither, but made me hungry. I would eat it.
Yeah, if you have a large group of guests, or you know some has allergies or maybe don't like shrimps, are vegetarians etc. it's pretty usual to make two or three smaller cakes. Like one with meat and cheese, one with shrimps and salmon and one vegetarian.
This is the silly one with everything at the same time. :)
looks very very delicious 😋 yummy!
This is the first time I've seen such a strange dish.
Daaymn! That looks interestinf :p haha.
Looks very good for you 😊😊 tasty can u make with 9 grain bread
I would not recommend it. The whole reason behind using white bread is that it's very good and sucking up the moist and becoming almost one with the fillings. It's not healthy, but for this vertain dish it taste better :)
