One of my favorite dishes to enjoy on a rainy day is a noodle dish with a soothing broth called Ban Mian. This popular dish can be found in many food courts and never goes out of style, despite numerous attempts to modernize or add a fancy twist to it. For me, the classic version remains the best.
The best part of this dish is the handmade noodles. I always choose food stalls that make their noodles on-site because it ensures freshness and a pleasant texture.
I’m actually surprised that this generously portioned bowl only costs S$4. With most food prices increasing, this dish remains relatively affordable.
They offer a variety of dishes, but I’m here specifically for the Ban Mian, so I tried to resist the temptation of the other appealing options.
One of the reasons this dish is so enjoyable is the variety of ingredients that make it up. Aside from the handmade noodles, there are additional ingredients that enhance both the flavor and texture. The dish includes plenty of perfectly cooked vegetables, which not only make it healthier but also more visually appealing.
The dried anchovies enhance both the flavor and texture of the dish. I enjoy munching on them while they're still crunchy. As tempting as it is to eat all the dried fish at once, I make sure to save some and let them soak in the soup to allow their flavor to blend with the other ingredients.
In conclusion, Ban Mian is more than just a comforting meal; it’s a reminder of simple pleasures and timeless flavors. Despite the evolving food scene, some classics remain unbeatable. If you haven’t tried this dish yet, you’re missing out on a true comfort food experience.
