Philippines is famous not just for its rich culture and traditions. More so, due to its majestic travel destinations which are undeniably Instagram-worthy. In addition, tourists from other countries come and go to the Philippines to also try its local and originally-made foods.
Filipinos are too fond this certain cuisine known as "deep-fried egg rolls" or popularly called as "lumpia."
There are a lot of varieties of lumpia which differs on the stuffed (fillings) and the way of wrapping and cooking. Some of it are as follows:
Lumpiang shanghai. It uses ground pork meat mixed with carrots, garlic, onion, and egg (as thickener).
Lumpiang togue. Consists of mungbean sprouts as its filling.
Lumpiang sariwa. Unlike lumpiang shanghai and togue, lumpiang sariwa (or "freshly-made lumpia" uses different wrapper with brunched vegetables inside. Hence, after wrapping up, it can be eaten without further frying.
Dynamite lumpia.
In this another catch of food blog, let me share this simple recipe of "DYNAMITE LUMPIA":
Dynamite lumpia or simply referred to as "Dinamita", is a version of the classic Filipino deep-fried egg rolls that uses different fillings, mainly the long green chili. What made this version more unique and thriller is its "hot taste or spice" which is basically because of the chili. The person who'll eat it will surely have a "fiery mouth."
To make this oh-so-yummy lumpia, we only need a few ingredients listed below:
Lumpia wrapper or egg crépe. This ingredient will be used to wrap up the chili and its fillings. It can be bought in any supermarket or can also be homemade.
Long green chilis. Make sure to buy long chilis to perfectly fit in the wrappers.
Catsup and grated cheese. These two ingredients will serve as the fillings. Brands and varieties depends on the cook's preferences.
Now, let's get to the procedures:
- First, do the "mise en place" or preparing the needed ingredients.
- Second, remove the seeds inside the chili pods. This is to lessen up the extreme spice and avoid risk of appendicitis.
- Next, place the preferred stuffed ingredients inside the chili pods.
I, we preferred catsup and gratef cheese. Thus, other ingredients can also be used such as ham, sausage, meat, etcetera. However, make sure to not overlap the spice because it is the main highlight of this food.
- After spreading out the catsup, fill the insides with cheese.
For the cheese, I like to use mozzarella but it's not available in our place. So next time, I will be using easy-melt cheese to make it more delicious.
- Fifth, roll the green chili filled with stuffed ingredients using the lumpia wrapper (egg crépe).
Repeat the steps 3 to 5 until all the green chilis are wrapped.
- Lastly, deep-fry in a hot oil until golden brown.
After frying, serve while its hot and paired with dips. ENJOY!
CLOSING THOUGHTS
Dynamite lumpia was served as our afternoon snack last Tuesday afternoon. I, along with my parents and siblings, enjoyed this food despite of how spicy it is. Tears built up in our eyes but still, we had the best.
Since there was only 20-pieces fried at that day, the whole family were asking for more. And to satisfy our cravings, I will gonna make another batch on Saturday. So exciting! 🤎
Try it out, guys and let's all set our mouths with fire!
