Savoring Simplicity: My Pulled Pork Burger Recipe

in Foodies Bee Hive11 months ago (edited)

This dish holds a special place in my heart and in my roving kitchen. Picture a piece of pork so tender and juicy that it simply falls apart with a fork, draped in this rich, smoky sauce, creating a blend of flavors that transports you straight to the Southern United States.

I embarked on this culinary adventure some time ago, driven by my curiosity and love for simple yet flavorful dishes. The great thing about Pulled Pork is its simplicity. You don't need to be a star chef to succeed in making this dish. With just a few ingredients and a bit of patience, you can create something magical.

Every time I prepare this dish, it's as if I'm offering a part of myself. It's not just shredded pork; it's an experience, a memory, a moment of sharing.

Few dishes have the power to become emblematic of a person. In my home, Pulled Pork has become synonymous with convivial evenings, lively discussions, and shared laughter around a meal made with love.

Ingredients (for 8 people)

  • 2 kg of pork shoulder with or without bone (but with bone is better, that's where the most flavor is)
  • 2 small onions
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 2 dl of cider
  • 200 ml of BBQ sauce
  • 150 ml of ketchup

For the cole slaw (to replace the salad in the burger):

  • 100 g of plain yogurt
  • 100 g mayonnaise
  • 5 cl cider
  • 200 g carrots, peeled, cut into fine strips
  • 200 g white cabbage, cut into fine strips
  • Salt and pepper

For this recipe, you will need a cast-iron casserole dish.

First, on the stove, sauté the sliced onions in butter. Once they are nicely browned, add the pork to brown it on all sides.

My butcher had cut the pork into pieces, but it's better if he doesn't. Indeed, it takes up too much space when cut and makes this part of the recipe more difficult.

While the meat is browning on all sides over low heat, it's time to prepare the sauce.

For this, it's quite straightforward: just pour all the barbecue sauce, ketchup, cider, and cinnamon into a bowl.

Once the meat is nicely browned, pour the entire sauce mixture over the pork.

Let the mixture simmer gently on low heat while you preheat the oven to 120 degrees Celsius.

Once the oven reaches the right temperature, cover your cast-iron casserole and place it in the oven.

Set a timer for 2 hours!

Yes, it's a long process, but this allows the meat to cook slowly and become incredibly tender (after the initial 2 hours, you'll need to cook it for an additional 2 hours).

In the meantime, you can start preparing the cole slaw.

Again, nothing too complicated, you just need to put all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix them well (100 g of plain yogurt, 100 g mayonnaise, 5 cl cider, 200 g carrots peeled and cut into fine strips, 200 g white cabbage cut into fine strips, salt, and pepper).

Mix everything thoroughly and refrigerate it until the meat is ready.

Ideally, it's even better to make this salad the day before!

For my part, I added a red onion, but that's just because I love red onion!

Ding! The oven timer goes off - it's already been 2 hours!

I take the dish out of the oven, as it will make the next steps easier.

Upon opening, I notice that the edges have caramelized. In the photo, it might look burnt, but it's not – it's just the sugar in the sauce caramelizing.

Anyway, now it's time to turn the meat over.

Once that's done, back into the oven it goes for another 2 hours!

These are probably the longest 2 hours because that's when an excellent aroma starts to fill the entire house, haha 😜

Ding again, it's the oven!

After 4 hours of slow cooking, the meat is finally done. It's time to take it out of the oven. Now, you're just a few minutes away from eating.

All you need to do is take a fork and shred the meat. You'll see, it's so tender that it practically falls apart on its own.

Now that that's done, all that's left is to assemble your burgers.

On the bottom bun, spread a little mayonnaise, then add a generous layer of pulled pork. Top it with the cole slaw and close the burger with the top bun, which you've also spread with mayonnaise.

And there you have it, it's ready to eat! Serve it with fries, diced potatoes, or whatever you like 😋

Have you heard of the pulled pork burger? If so, I imagine you have a different recipe than this one. What's yours?

Yes! I was just say8ng that to some young lads who for some reason like to visit us a few times of year. They're in their late 20's and we met them on the road once. They like to learn from us I think. Bless. Anyway every time they come I like to make them food - whether it's scrambled eggs, a tagine, whatever I'm making. They are so gushingly effusive and grateful and I was explaining how much it's important to 'break bread' together - to enjoy a shared meal that's made with love, and the older I get the more I enjoy it. Pickled red cabbage from the garden, homemade bread, olives, cheese. The kind of 'assemble and pass it around' dish that brings a shared vibe to the dinner plate.

Your meal strikes me as this kind of meal.

I've never made pulled pork before (as I said in a previous post, I'm not a huge meat eater) but honestly this makes me want to rush out to my local (organic and local) pork supplier! Bookmarking for the one occasion I decide that's what I'm going to do!

Haha, so when you make pulled pork, I'd like you to take a picture for me!

What a delicious recipe, I loved it.

Thank you for your comment and thank you for stopping by!

Good thing I already had dinner as it looks great! I'm bookmarking the recipe 😎

Haha, let me know when you've cooked it! In fact, there's a crazy amount of recipes out there.

The first time I saw pulled pork, it was a guy who barbecued it for 10 hours! It looked so tasty!

For my part, I took the easy way out. But it's also really good 😋

10 hours? 😯 Are you sure? What was he aiming for? For shoe sole?

Haha yes 10 hours. It's very gentle cooking so it tenderizes the meat. But it's just crazy!

I think I saw this video on Tiktok a few weeks ago.

I love pulled pork an your recipe, thanks for sharing us. Looks amazing 😍

Thanks for your nice comment and thanks for stopping by!

of couuuuuuuuuurse i've heard of it. hehehe we have it here at least once a month!!! heehe and that "burnt part" is the BEST tasting stuff hahahaha yum!!!

.... and of course... i'm the original #dreemer 😄

Haha, this recipe is a bit old already (just over a week), but as I was writing it yesterday I couldn't stop myself from going to get something to eat, my tummy was rumbling haha!

Maybe one day we'll all make one together 😜

p.s. i saw that you had two posts and i was like whoaaa - he is ambitious... then i saw the boo boo - hehehe

happens to us all! LOL

Yes, a small mistake on my part. But you learn by doing, and now I know how to react!

You have done justice to this recipe. It looks yummy, I feel like having a bite of it.
I will try to make it also.
#dreemerforlife

Haha, thank you very much for your comment. I'm touched!

Send me a photo when it's done!

The burger looks so delectable. At first I forgot that this was a burger recipe and as I got to the part where the pork was shredded, I asked myself, "what now, do you eat it like that?"😅😅 But then I scrolled a little and saw the burger.

This is a great recipe to try. Although it does require patience and electricity bill money😄. 4 hours is a long time.
Thanks for sharing your recipe dear, have a nice day.

#dreemerforlife

Haha, actually I also thought that the electricity bill was going to climb really high.

But actually it's slow cooking and once the oven has reached its temperature it doesn't need much electricity to maintain its temperature.

In total, I counted and the oven consumed approximately $0.26 for 4 hours.

What cost the most was the meat.

But in total, I got it for exactly $19.58. Knowing that it's for 8, that's $2.44 per person.

It depends on which country you come from, but here, it's not much 👍

Thank you for your comment!

Wow, I though the oven would consume way more than that.
Nice one.

You're welcome dear!

Oh my!!! That looks so tasty, thanks for the recipe, I would definitely try this out🥰
#dreemport

Haha, send a photo when it's done! I can't wait to see how my recipe turns out for others!

Hehehhe, I'll surely do that 🥰

I love seeing nice meal and knowing its recipe aren't that hard to get and prepare. That pork burger would taste delicious and those who are tasting this would enjoy it. 😉
#dreemport

That's right, it's really simple to do. The hardest part is to wait and not throw yourself into the oven haha 😂

Hehehe 😀
That's right.

Though I'm not really of fan of pork, what you have up there definitely got me salivating. Simple, well explained recipe.
#dreemerforlife

I understand, pulled pork is not for everyone.

First of all, it's very sweet because of the barbecue sauce.

But if you get the chance to try this recipe, let me know!
