I was bringing my son's uniform shorts to be fixed at the tailor and while I was waiting for it to be done, I wandered a bit further to this usual roadside stall selling Apam Balik.

So what is Apam Balik?

Apam balik is actually a Chinese pancake made with flour and topped with some peanut crumbles and corn, drizzled with a bit of condensed milk. So it has a great combination of sweet and savory and some crunches too. It is made on these small hot plates.

Source from Wikipedia defines it as this:

Apam balik (lit. 'turnover pancake'),[3] also known as terang bulan (lit. 'moonlight'), martabak manis (lit. 'sweet martabak'), peanut pancake or mànjiānguǒ (Chinese: 曼煎粿), is a sweet dessert originating in Chinese cuisine which now consists of many varieties at specialist roadside stalls or restaurants throughout Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.[4] It can also be found in Hong Kong as (Chinese: 冷糕) and Taiwan as (Chinese: 麥仔煎).

We can actually chose whether we like it thin like this that I am showing you or the thicker type. We can also customise our choice to have more creamy corn with an additional RM0.50 per piece. The usual thin slice is RM1 per piece and if we opt for the thicker texture type, it is RM2.

I love the thinner type like this and don't quite like the other type so I chose this. The hawker will keep making lots and lots of it. They need to flip it over once it's done to avoid it from getting burnt.

Here are the toppings for it. Some other stalls may have some fancy toppings but I like it best this way, traditional and simple.

Look, I bought 5 pieces and I gobbled all down in the car hehe! Too delicious. It was still warm and crispy so I did not want to wait any longer to enjoy them, in case they turn soggy.

Simple Street Food but Satisfying!

I think perhaps it was a Chinese snack that originated from China but now it is sold by Malays and Indians too in Malaysia. It is rather common and it really serves as the best quick snack. If you see them, don't miss them out!

I almost went back to buy a second round but I remember I have lunch at home.

Have you seen or eaten anything similar to this in your place?

Sort:

Looks like the Apam Balik sold in Taman Melawati 😁😁.

I love the thin and crispy apam balik. For me, it tastes much netter compared to the thick one

Wow you are absolutely correct 👏🏻 Are you from around here?

My mom live in Fasa 5 area 😁 i am always at Taman Melawati over the weekend.

U also live in Taman Melawati?

Hahah yes. I am nearer to Bkt Mas side.

It seems exotic!

Good photos, describe how much you like it. 😉

Super tasty, I'd say.

Greeting!

Oh satu means 1 piece in Malay. So 1 piece costs RM1. Tebal means thick in Malay and it is RM2 per piece. They are certainly delicious.

Thank you very much for explaining it to me @happycrazycon !

Sometimes we underestimate it, but many times it is tastier and made with more care.

You got that right!!!

Indonesia have this food, but the name is martabak piring, I think the taste same like apam balik. now, my mouth watering, I love this food and remember me about childhood :D

Ah yes I am sure you have it in Indonesia! Thanks for sharing the name with me!

Looks yummy! I always loved the corn kernels!

yes I have seen when my mum prepared it for an Indian man she was working for here in Nigeria, but I didn't taste it, though some I tasted where too spicy. Good food by the way

This is one of my favorite street foods. In my country this snack is called Martabak while in the area where I live in Aceh this snack is called Apam, he he. For the taste, in my opinion, it's the same as apam balik.

Oh I see. Thanks for letting me know what it is in Indonesia!
