Different kinds of foreign cookies are ready imported into our country Nigeria, some of them include the popular ones we know such as digestive biscuits, cabin biscuits, shortbread, gingerbread and so on. But somehow, we have failed to realize that in Nigeria and Africa at large, we have a local production of cookie which is known as chin-chin. It is no longer a new deal that chin- chin has become the popular Nigerian cookie that can be paired with beverages such as tea, chocolate, milk, juice and so on. These bite shaped Nigerian cookies can easily be compared to foreign cookies because they have the kind of Milky, flaky, crunchy taste and the sweetness that these cookies have.
In Nigeria, the chin-chin has become more than just a snack but as elevated to the status that has become a shared culture. One that is viable to every tribe across the country as it does not discriminate and everyone actually enjoy the sweetness and the savory taste of this cookie. This cookie can be used anywhere at any time, it can be served in the home, at parties, events, occasions, Christmas, weddings or meetings. The chin chin can be produced in different shapes depending on the baker sometimes it could be in Square shapes, triangles, circles or rough shape.
The interesting Aspects in the production of this snack is that almost everyone can make it as it does not involve a rigorous process or difficult task involved. All that is needed is to get the necessary ingredients and add them in the right proportion to get the sweet taste required. In essence, the major ingredients needed to make this Nigerian cookies are: flour, butter, milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, eggs, groundnut oil etc. All these are necessary to form the base of the dough, add sweetness, cookie-like texture, richness, softness and so on.
In preparing this snack, all you do is mix up the ingredients of flour, sugar and nutmeg, before adding butter and milk, mix till the dough becomes smooth. After the mixture, you spread the dough out with a roller then cut into desired shapes mostly square. The cooking of the snack can be achieved in two ways, it's either you fry the pieces in hot oil till they turn golden brown or you bake them in an oven. The baking is mostly considered as people are warned to avoid fried foods to avoid health issues.
In conclusion, this snack can be modified to suit a person's taste, for instance, a vegan can avoid the use of sugar, eggs or diary products and replaced with plant based. But in all, it is a desirable snack that is sweet and crunchy and also has a unique flavor. This cookie is very much affordable to all.
