This was my first trip to Nashville Tennessee and the weather was perfect. When we first arrived, it was raining and shortly after picking up the rental car the clouds parted, and I was on my way to a great trip.
Our first stop was at 6th and Peabody, the Ole Smokey Moonshine distillery and Yee Haw Brewery for a tasting. Ole Smokey was offering six moonshine tasters and a draft beer for $10. I personally am not a moonshine fan, but my husband is. So, I went for him and boy I am glad I did. The first small taster shot they gave us was Blue Flame and I wasn’t a fan, it was the traditional moonshine flavor that I don’t care for. The second taster was the Apple Pie, which I did enjoy. The Apple Pie was made from the traditional Moonshine with apple and cinnamon flavors added. The third was margarita and it was even better than the last. The tasters started tasting more like a mixed drink which is what I prefer. Then came a sample of the moonshine pickles, they are dill pickles soaked in moonshine. You may question that but imagine putting them into a bloody Mary or on the side of some hot chicken from Hattie B’s and you’ll be convinced, they were spectacular. More about Hattie B’s later. Then came the peanut butter whiskey, I asked for a half of a sample because in wasn’t sure I would like it, bad choice, it was superb. It is made from real peanut butter and not fake stuff with the fake flavoring, and you could really taste the difference. And finally, was the key lime pie, it had a milky look to it and was so creamy you thought you were drinking dessert. Alongside of our tasters, I had a Yee Haw Pilsner which was excellent. My husband had a Yee Haw IPA and he loved it. The tasters were prechosen but the beer you were able to pick what you liked.
After our tasting we did some shopping in the gift shop area. The gift shop had great merchandise and we made our way over to the bar for a couple of beers and listen to the band that was playing. I also got a shot over ice of the Ole Smokey banana pudding cream moonshine, that was by far my favorite one! Yee Haw! They also have two permanent food trucks type restaurants. The restaurants were White duck tacos and Daddy’s dogs. We opted for the white duck tacos, and they have lots of very different options! We tried duck with mole, steak and cheese and Bangkok shrimp tacos. We loved the Tacos! My husband had previously been to Ole Smokey and had the Daddy’s Dog which he loved. The hot dogs are piled with all kinds of toppings.

Next stop downtown Broadway to Tootsies. This was by far my most favorite spot to listen to music. We especially liked Jake Maurer, he plays at Tootsies several times a week on the main stage downstairs. We stopped into Tequila Cowboy next for some cocktails and did a little dancing with a few other groups who were out celebrating a 40th birthday. Then off to Ole Red which is Blake Sheldon’s place, and they had a band playing and everyone was on the dancefloor having a blast. We watched everyone from upstairs looking down at the dancefloor and the energy was great.

On our walk back we tried to find food anywhere we could, not much was open at that point, so we stumbled into Slim and Husky’s Pizza Beeria at the mall just down from our hotel. It did not disappoint and then off to our hotel with leftover pizza boxes in hand to crash for the night and rest up to do it all over again. We stayed at the Holiday Inn express right on Broadway which made it nice to access downtown on foot. There’s also a Whole food down about a block away with a parking garage. Our room was clean and updated with a fridge and a microwave which came in handy with leftovers, and a free buffet breakfast every morning that wasn’t too bad when you’re a little hungover and need food.
The hotel next to our hotel was the Grand Hyatt and was beautiful and the first morning we headed over for brunch. They had a beautiful buffet, or you could order off the menu. We wandered around Broadway shopping and went to Kid Rocks bar that’s four stories high with different bands playing on every floor. At the end of Broadway near the pedestrian bridge is a cute bar and restaurant in an old feed store called Acme Feed. Id been craving a frozen drink and they had several flavors to choose from. Hung out there and watched the band for a bit, then we were off and walking on Broadway to find the next adventure that was waiting for us.

Our friends at this point were tired and wanted to go back to the room and nap and we were able to get into Jason Aldean’s rooftop restaurant for the tomahawk steak I’d been looking at on the menu online before we even left CA. so my husband and I took the opportunity to celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary. The meal did not disappoint, we shared it and it was perfect.
This was huge and was plenty for two to share.
Off to the strip we wandered and again made our way back to Tootsies to listen to Jake Maurer play. We found a table next to another couple and then a mom and her two daughters sat at the table on the other side of us. Let’s just say this night will go down in history, we all had a blast. Singing, dancing, drinking and talking until the placed closed down or so we thought. It must not have been that late because on our drunken walk back to the hotel we found Hattie B’s was open and we stumbled into the line and ordered one of everything and back to our room we went. My husband didn’t get to enjoy the food until the next day. He prayed to the porcelain god that night. Our newfound friends kept buying my husband shots, I knew better and stuck to my vodka red bull and paced myself. I didn’t want to be hungover and not feel well on this trip, we only had five days.

The next day we had reserved tickets to tour Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage and I’m glad we did I love touring old houses and this mansion didn’t disappoint. The tour group was small and didn’t drag out forever, but you were not allowed to take photos inside. After the guided tour inside you could explore the gardens, gravesites and the other outbuildings on your own time.

We returned back to the downtown for lunch and came across “The Diner” on the corner of 3rd South and Demonbreun. I had the BBQ shrimp and grits, the best I’ve ever had. Just a short walk from there we walked over the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge we had read about it before leaving for Nashville and figured it was something we should do. Great views of the city and Nissan Stadium across the river.

That evening we had dinner across the street from our hotel at the Grand Hyatt in the restaurant called The Nashville Grange. I ordered the pork shank with green and polenta. FANTASTIC!!!!
Pork Shank YUM!
The next day we took the backroads to the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg Tennessee. I was so glad we took all the backroads because we were able to see all the beautiful houses along the way and we also learned they have armadillos there, who knew. I had heard that if you visit Lynchburg you should stop at Miss. Mary Bobo’s restaurant, so I made reservations before our tour. There is a set menu everyday Fried chicken, meatloaf, greens, mac and cheese etc. it’s in a cute white house and all the rooms are decorated different. Service is very fast, and the food is good.

After lunch we shopped in town and then headed over to Jack’s. Kathy and I were not into whiskey but we both really enjoyed the tour. My husband had been to Nashville for work and took the tour and had told us we would like it. It’s a short walking tour outside and into some buildings. We had a tasting in the barrel room and then shopped in the gift store and had some traditional candy called Goo Goo cluster.

After leaving Lynchburg I wanted to stop in a little town on the way back called Franklin. We shopped and had a quick dinner and took the freeway back to Nashville. It had been a long day, but we weren’t ready to go back to our room yet. It was our last night so My husband took me to printer’s alley, and we shopped for cowboy boots downtown, dropped into a couple small bars and got drinks and made our way back to our hotel. In the morning we checked out of our hotel and headed to Cooter’s Place’ Dukes of Hazzard Museum featuring pictures, props, costumes and memorabilia and Cooter’s tow truck from the show. My husband is a big fan, so I surprised him when I found it before our trip. There’s a General Lee and all the merchandise from the show, my husband kept saying I had that, I remember that. There’s no charge and it was close to the Grand Ole Opry, so we stopped by there also and walked around outside and went into the gift shop but didn’t go on a tour or see anyone perform. Maybe next trip, we will definitely be going back, we both LOVED Nashville! One of my favorite places so far, the people, the music and food, the whole vibe was great and we felt very safe there and had a great anniversary trip!
