When I was at the store picking up some last minute items before we took off to the coast to go camping I found these sandwich maker deleos. At first I thought no way, then I figured what the hell, might as well give them a try.
Made out of cast iron with 2 foot handles and your choice of a single or double sandwich maker, these have little weight to them. There is a little latch that locks the two handles together to keep the 2-halves of the cast iron cooking surface tight together. Keeping the contents of your sandwich inside. They seem to be built pretty well so how about we try to make pizza pockets with them over the camp fire?
First apply a good amount butter on one side of the bread and place it in one half of the sandwich maker. Pushing it down to create a pocket.
Slap on a healthy helping of pizza sauce
Next add some gooey goodness by putting a nice pile of mozzarella cheese in there
Pepperoni!!! Stack on some Pepperoni and add another pile of mozzarella cheese, fill that thing up!!
Butter up 2 more pieces of bread lay them on top and close the the two halves together. Make sure the two pieces of bread stay centered over each other so the cheese can’t escape. Then place them over the hot coals of your camp fire and cook them slowly. Flip them every few minutes to cook both sides the same. Don’t be afraid to take a peak in order to get them cooked just the way you like it. Make sure you use a good amount of butter on the bread to keep them from sticking. It took about 10-15 minutes to get these pizza pockets to look like this
Let them cool for a bit unless you want that lava like cheese and pizza sauce to burn your taste buds off and ruin your weekend. Plus it gives time for the outside to become crispy.
Now it’s time to see if these turned out the way I hoped they would...
Buttery crispy outside and the stretchy mozzarella cheese along with a thick layer pepperoni... Lord help me!!! These turned out amazing!! While I was chowing down on my pizza pockets, Mama-Splatts was coming up with ideas for all kinds of different sandwiches. Stuffed French toast, omelettes, and all kinds of hot sandwich ideas. Maybe we should have wrote them down??? I have a feeling we might even use these at the house whenever we have the washtub burn barrel going. One thing we think would make these better is to use a thicker bread when making pizza pockets. The combination of pizza sauce, butter and cheese softens the bread a lot and we had the cheese break through the bread on a couple of them causing them to stick a little bit. But all in all these camping sandwich makers are pretty awesome.

At first sight I thought this was one of those As Seen On TV things that seems to work like magic on the TV but when you get it home... you discover it is the biggest POS you laid your hands on. Lol. One of those “Gotcha!” gadgets. Maybe it was beginners luck but these sure did turn out tasty!!
It’s nice to add another way to cook over the camp fire. Also I think this gadget had endless possibilities to the type of sandwiches/pockets that can be made. Now it’s time to get creative.

When I saw the cover image I was expecting waffle which I guess is probably possible but definitely wasn't expecting a pizza sandwich. Now I'm hungry. I wanna go camping too. And fishing. Great! Now I wanna cast a line from the campground with a pizza sandwich on standby.
What about using tortillas and make some sort of toasted wrap deleo?? Or fill the tortilla with and egg mixture to make breakfast sandwiches... I am telling you the options are endless with these bad boys.
That's a lotta deleo options. I've heard of one or two deleos at a time, this is just nuts!

I was thinking about using crescent rolls, use 2 of the triangles per side and fill it with cream cheese and some blackberry jam or any kind of jam for that matter. Or put chocolate, graham cracker chunks and marshmallows inside.... Diabetes here I come. 😂🤣😂
That's a great idea, but don't those crescent rolls have perforations? Stuff might leak out. Chocolate, graham cracker chunks and marshmallows sounds thick. Yup, diabetes pockets!
