Blessed day have all my dear friends who love cooking and good food, I hope you are well enjoying this new contest supported by the OCD team, whose purpose is to promote small communities.
This contest about the preparation of a typical dish from your country and that it was also your favorite dish, kept me thinking for several days. Most of my favorite creole dishes are dishes whose ingredients are a bit difficult to find in this country.
After so much thinking, and with the help and support of my friend @carolinacardoza, I came up with the idea of making a delicious dessert typical of Venezuelan Creole sweets. I'm talking about the "Buñuelos de yuca en almíbar de papelón".
I chose to make this candy because it is one of my favorites, I always asked my mom to prepare them to enjoy them freshly made with a good cup of coffee.
Fritters are traditional in the eastern part of the country, they are served hot and are one of the typical sweets prepared during Holy Week, as well as dulce de lechosa.
I confess that this is the first time I prepare them by myself, I have participated many times in their preparation, but I had never made them alone and although they seem easy for me it was quite a challenge.
- 1 kilo de yuca
- 200 gramos de papelón
- 1 huevo
- Unas ramitas de canela
- 4 clavitos de olor
- 1 kilo of yucca
- 200 grams of papelón
- 1 egg
- A few cinnamon sticks
- 4 cloves
#1
Remove the peel from the yucca and wash it well.
#2
Cut the yucca into pieces and parboil them with enough water.
#3
Mash the yucca until a very smooth puree is formed.
#4
Knead the puree with an egg to smooth the dough well.
#5
Make an arepita with the dough in the shape of a donut and roll in flour.
#6
Fry the doughnuts in hot oil and then dry on absorbent paper.
To prepare the syrup, chop the paprika into small pieces and place them in a small pot with half a cup of water, the cinnamon pieces and the cloves. Stir constantly with a paddle until all the paprika is dissolved. Let it boil until obtaining the consistency of a syrup.
After removing the syrup from the fire, it is passed through a fine strainer to separate the cinnamon and cloves.
Finally the fritters are served and bathed with a little bit of syrup. Particularly, I like them with little syrup, some people prefer to dip the fritter in the syrup but it is all a matter of taste.
Preparing these fritters turned out to be for me an evocation of flavors, smells and memories. Imagining myself making this Creole sweet with my mother, resulted in a wellspring of mixed feelings, which is why these fritters are bathed in a syrup of melancholy. I hope to be able to meet my mom again very soon and share with you more recipes of Venezuelan Creole sweets.
