A basket filled with homemade treats means way more than mass-produced commercialized gifts. It will save you more than just a penny and can be great fun for the whole family.
Who knows, you may have a budding master chef in your home!
I know my friend @apanamamama's young son loves baking, and I'm sure there are many more Moms whose little ones would love to get stuck in to help. and learn at the same time. To be totally honest, that's how I learnt as well, they were the taste testers;)
I must have made 1000s of cookies in my lifetime, most of them when my sons were growing up.
There was a period where they also wanted to 'help' Mom, sometimes getting in the way, and their cookie dough would end up being a little sandy as they would get bored, disappear, and be back again. Naturally, I gave them their own pans, I did not feel like biting into a sandy cookie;)
They were very proud of their efforts, and although they did not become master bakers, they know how to cook today! My older son is very particular, he even roasts and blends his own spices for curries.
I felt like making fudge, but of course, that is loaded with sugar, something I've been trying to avoid - note the word 'trying'.
I learnt from an old #fruitsandveggies friend @plantstoplanks about what a good alternative dates is for sugar when baking. I had gorgeous plump Medjool dates and also remembered an old recipe for Date chews, except that one has added sugar, but I opted not to add it.
Granted the Marie Biscuits that I would use do have sugar, but it's a very plain tea biscuit, and not overly sweet.
A big plus is that these chewy bites do not need to be baked!
The Ingredients:
Recipe - Chewy Date Caramel Bites
- 125 gram Butter
- 200 gram Medjool Dates
- 5ml Vanilla
- 2ml Salt
- 1 packet Marie biscuits - any plain tea biscuit
Melt butter, dates, vanilla and salt in a large pot, stirring till it forms a thick paste-like mixture
Add crushed biscuits, and mix lightly to coat biscuit crumbs
Press with fingertips into a square baking tin, leave to cool in the refrigerator for approx 10 min, cut into squares, and return to refrigerator to cool completely before packing.
Pack into a pretty bowl as a gift, wrap in cellophane or netting, and tie with a pretty ribbon. Add a label or gift card, and store it in the refrigerator.
Serve straight from the refrigerator
Chewy date caramel bites - an irresistible treat!
A Special gift for someone special <3
BON APPETIT FRIENDS!
I hope this very quick and easy, but delectable healthier sweet treat will inspire you to avoid the craziness of year-end shopping at the malls and get stuck into the kitchen to make your own gifts!

This is super easy to make it!
I am sure, I will this one 😊
Maybe I will add roasted coconut flakes for the topping 😊
You always have the niftiest ideas!
Absolutely agree!
I love exploring many possibilities 😊
Great idea, that for sure will take it to another level @anggreklestari! The original recipe has sugar in it and tells one to dip the squares in sugar, imagine how sweet!
One could easily turn this into a plant-based version.
Toasted coconut next time for sure thank you for that!
My library has a book on d.i.y. energy bars and snacks including imitation Larabars with dates and just a few other ingredients. It's an uncommon but not unwelcome flavor, and figs or dates are much healthier than most commercial products.
Homemade energy bars sounds great, I'm always disappointed with the mass-produced ones! They also contain artificial preservatives.
Ohh I have got to stop opening food posts on Hive :)) I only get hungrier and hungrier. I've never been into dates to be honest, but this recipe might just change that!
Dates on their own can be overwhelming but when used in baking they bring a caramel like flavour.
Not good looking at food posts when you're hungry!

Oh goodness. You have to stop posting recipes that look delicious. Ha! I love dates and I'm sure I could convince my little chef to make these. I learned recently that on Keto only 1-2 dates per day is allowed due to their sugar content. So sad. I was eating a lot every day! Ha! But I might just have to have him make these for a special Christmas or Thanksgiving treat. Definitely look amazing. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
I forgot you're on Keto! Yes dates are super sweet, excellent sugar replacement. I'm sure your little chef would enjoy making these😉
I'm terrible at keeping Keto though. Ha!
At least you try🤗
I love this recipe. Easy to make and good for you too! Forget about gifts (although this is a nifty gift idea). I can make them for myself. Instead of eating the chocolate bits off the top of cookies (yes, I do that!) I can nibble on these date-based goodies. Satisfy the sweet tooth and the urge to snack.
I'm not much of a cook--no patience--but this is doable. Thanks, @lizelle
Haha @agmoore, don't tell anyone, but I'm slowly making a dent in these chewy cookies😉
My terrible sweet tooth often does things with chocolate, just like you're describing!
This is very doable, quick and delicious. I'll dip the square in toasted coconut next time, as @anggreklestari suggested!
Thank you for the visit 😊
My son is doing Thanksgiving shopping for me. Just logged in and read your reply. Reminded me to order the ingredients for me cookies :))

I just sit in front of the computer reading, but also, I imagine myself with a nice cup of freshly brewed coffee and a few pieces of those cookies, which are also easy to make, my little daughter who is not so little anymore loves to bake cookies with my help of course, I just showed her the recipe and she told me to buy the ingredients for her to make them, they look really good. that's why I imagined myself eating them with a cup of coffee.
I hope you get to taste the real thing, enjoy when you do!
These cookies looks so yummy and give me much Christmas vibe, yes are good as a gift but I can see them easily on tge Christmas table served in a red dish 😍
Yes they would be perfect for the Christmas table, thank you for stopping by @noemilunastorta!
This recipe is great, as soon as I saw the ingredients I knew I was going to like it, I also often replace sugar with dates, they are healthier, thanks for your recipe I find it simple but special and delicious! 😊🌹
Yes dates are a great sugar replacement in baking. This is super quick and easy, only a handful of ingredients but really yum!
I'm definitely feeling the holiday vibe setting in! Once we get through Thanksgiving, baking time is upon us... and homemade treats are a wonderful thing to give to friends and family.
Side note: Seeing Maria Cookies brings up memories from a very distant past!
It's unreal just how quickly this year has gone by!
Yes those cookies have been around forever, so you also have them.
The shopping malls have been decked out for a while already, much temptations there, but homemade tastes way better😉
Thank you for popping in @curatorcat.ccc
I love sweets always, and here the sweets are not completely sugary as the date is healthy too. Thanks for sharing the recipe for the nice dessert.
That's why I made it, I have such a sweet tooth! And, they were delightful!
It's a great recipe and it really looks crunchy. It's really a great treat.
It for sure is delicious, but more of a creamy chewy texture. Thank you @edith-4angelseu 😊
That looks sooooo good as a treat 🤤🤤.
They're delicious and super quick to make! Thank you @ruffatotmeee
