If last time I was introducing you to some common Laotian food, this time, I am showing you some snacks and noodles that you can find in Vientiane. Since this is the capital, the food is also not exclusively Laotian. There are Chinese and strong Vietnamese influences in the food. Depending where you’re staying in the capital. You can either find Vietnamese places or French Cafes serving French Food. There is also a strong Chinese cuisine scene in Vientiane.

From this post, you can see some food that you can commonly find in Vientiane and if you get into this part of the world, these are must-try and must-haves.

Chao Gio

Basically Chao Gio is the vietnamese spring rolls. However, unlike other spring rolls, don’t be surprised if you’re coming home with glass noodles, salads, and a lot of things in plastic bags. I was surprised at first just because in Indonesia, spring rolls are served as is with sauce but not if you buy it in a Laotian place or even a Vietnamese place. I laughed on my way home and was amused just because the spring rolls were not something that I was used to but rather, a bag full of salads. For 30.000 KIP, I thought it was only one person portion but apparently, it was 2-3 people.

Khao Piak

If you’re craving a soupy noodle, a must try in Laos is Khao Piak but with crispy pork. They are rice noodles served with rich and savoury broth topped with a generous amount of fried onion, and depending on the meat of your choice, you can get crispy pork or chewy parts from the pork. You will also get bean sprouts and lime to garnish your soup. For a bowl, depending on the size, this meal can start from 25000 kip to 30000 kip. Usually a Khao Piak place will also sell dimsum and it’s a great accompaniment to have for the noodle soup.

Assorted Seafood and Chicken Snacks

If you’re not into trying the street food, there is a place that sells skewers of squid and chicken parts. There’s a place called Zhengxin, which seems to be a Chinese run franchise. I have to remind you that chicken and anything fried isn’t that cheap compared to local run food places. These things would cost even cheaper if you buy from street food but if you’re not a fan of them, this kind of establishment is where to go.

I find them familiar too . Similar to Chinese snacks hehe

yep! they are connected to china and even more these days, you can travel to Kunming from Vientiane Railway station. So, I am sure in the coming future, the influence will even be stronger and snacks will be more chinese instead local-local.
