The Chicko Roll

Regardless of what's going on in life, sometimes there is a comfort in seeking out the steady, stable, certain and unchanging.
Today, that was represented in the form of the ever-present classic Australian delicacy: The Chiko Roll.
Introduced in Australia in 1951 by Frank McEnroe as an inaccurately named "chicken roll", the Chiko Roll which doesn't contain chicken, became a cultural icon in fish and chips around the country.
The Chiko Roll does however contain cabbage, barley, carrot, green beans, beef, beef tallow, wheat cereal, celery and onion that is pulped and then enclosed inside a thick egg and flour tube of pastry. Then deep friend in vegetable oil.

While deep fried, it's strangely not greasy and comes complete with it's own branded packaging. They are not only available at fish and chipnshops, but also in the frozen food section of Australian supermarkets.
From a personal point of view, having something hot on a Winter's day is always great and having something iconic as a treat becomes a reminder that while something might not be flavour of the month, sometimes just sticking around is just as important.
Imagine the outrage if they stopped producing Chiko Rolls?

Unthinkable!
Be like the Chiko Roll, stick around regardless of what people think, your time will come.
Until next time, thanks for reading and I'll see you in the fish and chip shop!
