The one comfort food that most everyone loves is biscuits and gravy.
The process is fairly easy and as long as you take the time to brown the flower, the gravy is always excellent.
Ingredients:
1 can of biscuits (or if you have time, definitely make your own)
Get those into the oven following the package or recipe directions.
Gravy
1/2 lb ground beef
1/2 lb pork sausage
1/2 cup of flour
1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
1 tsp ground black pepper
2 tsp salt
3 cups milk
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 fresh lemon (optional, but the richness this adds is beautiful!)
Preparation:
To begin you are going to brown your meat. One important to remember is draining the fat will not allow you to brown the flour properly so that the gravy thickens.
Once the meat is browned throw in the flour and stir it throughout the meat on a medium low setting. You definitely want the flour to brown (browning also allows the flour to cook thoroughly).
The flour will coat the meat and at this time you're going to kick up the heat to medium high.
Grab the Heavy whipping cream you measured and pour over the meat.
This will begin the gravy process and trust me, this is going to get extremely thick very fast. Once the mixture looks pasty, (keep stirring) this is when you want to begin whisking the milk in a cup at a time, until all 3 cups are in the pan.
You want to keep whisking as the gravy begins to thicken.
Turn the burner down to medium low again and begin adding all the remaining ingredients - the lemon, salt, peper, and red pepper flakes - stir well.
Stir everything together and turn the burner up to medium and keep stirring.
See how thick it's become?
Turn off your burner and if your biscuits are ready like mine...
Another great addition to this type of meal is add some hash browns. The gravy works fabulously with those as well.
