Among the cookies I like to eat, the Royal Dansk is one. I think it is some time since I ate a last one, but each time I shut my eyes and imagine getting a mouthful I feel I almost taste its sumptuousness. Royal Dansk cookies are one of the few cookies that have a sweet, but also an intense, flavour and buttery character that I vividly recall after eating them.
They are in a normal blue can which is the only characteristic that makes them different. Close by, just above, is the corridor typical of a treasure chest, a chest loaded with gold.
I remember the first time I tasted them. I used to be younger and at Christmas they used to be part of the family. We'd all be in there, and naturally someone would want to open the tin, and then, the whole room would be filled with the aroma of the freshly baked cookies.
At that very moment, at that exact second, smashing into bits of stew the first cookie, An unique occasion, did occur. Shaping, however, far from being just a food to eat, it went beyond the experience for the sake of "eating. They are all addictive, because of their crunchy texture, of their butteriness and thanks to the optimum level of sweetness.
There are also cases in which I want to add to my diet what I baked, e.g., cookies. Unfortunately, at the current time, I hope one day that I can reproduce the illusion in my kitchener. Near smell of get baked cookie, sweet smell of cookie spread over the apartment, and then cookies is transferred to friends and relatives et cetera, as Royal Dansk cookies.
But I know I’ll get there eventually. I have a dream one day I will be an expert at baking cookies, and if I could, I would be proud to tell everyone. I may even begin to believe that I could create some new flavors, something new but the sense of home which I experience whilst eating Royal Dansk cookies.
I value them most as they sustain communities. More than just a bite, it is the memories, the haunts of the past, those people, food, all in one. Indeed, readily I remember having been in the circle around the table, joking and laughing whilst we performed the tin.
The Royal Dansk cookie is a tiny reintroduction to that feeling of childlike joy. More than a snack, it's an experience, a tiny bit of connection and comfort that makes me smile, just by picturing it.
Although it is now some time since I last enjoyed one, I will always have a soft spot for the Royal Dansk cookie. And who knows? I might be able to bake my own cookies someday, and when I am I will, of course, share them with all of you, much like the ones I've loved so much. Until then, I’ll keep dreaming and working toward it.
