Pancit Canton

Welcome back to another episode of our Philippine food series. My goal to share with you a taste of our food here in the Philippines. Sharing with you the food that we normally eat at home or order from a local store. Our food has also been influenced by the Chinese migrants for centuries now and the most prominent influence is noodles.

Today I will be showcasing a noodle dish called Pancit Canton. So popular that almost all restaurants have it on their menu.

We ordered the noodles from a restaurant near our area. As you could see below, takeout food is usually packed in paper bags and plastic.

The cost of one order is enough from 4-5 persons would be 200 pesos $(4.17 USD).

The Pancit Canton can be eaten during lunch, afternoon meals and dinner. It is also served during birthday parties, fiestas and other local celebrations.

The noodles have a lot of versions like fried, saucy, seafood, instant pancit canton and the dish differs from every region. For me, the best version is the one with a lot of sauce. It is perfect with bread that you could scoop the sauce with.

The version that we have today is just the regular one. It has some sauce but not a lot and the ingredients just a few vegetables and meat.

The noodles normally used are wheat flour noodles. The vegetables used here are beans, carrots and pechay. As for the meat I can see chicken and liver. You could say that it is a complete meal with all the ingredients included.

Now there are also special versions that include a lot of meat like slices of pork, beef, slices of chorizos, shrimp and sometimes even squid. These special versions are often found in local Chinese restaurants. I have tasted quite a few from our local restaurants.

As always almost all of our noodles requires a squeeze of our local lime called the Calamansi. I am not sure where or when the practice originated but that little bit our sourness somehow enhances the taste.

So there we have it the Philippine Pancit Canton. I hope you liked the dish for today.
Share your thoughts about noodles as I would love to hear from you.

Until then happy eating and enjoy life.
