Oh man, do I love wings! Chicken wings! The kind that flap in your belly, and not just the poultry kind! Okay, mostly the poultry kind. Especially the American style – crispy, crunchy, juicy! But every once in a while, I crave the thicker, richer batter of Korean-style wings. And my craving led me to RAWtruckr, a pretty popular Korean chicken wing joint with a few locations right here in our very own Chiang Mai. The setup is classic Korean or Japanese street food – plastic chairs, tables, and a hearty vibe.
Now, the location we visited was RAWtruckr Nimman, just one quick strut away from our newly opened 'green' establishment, The Spot. And when I say quick, I mean like a 3-minutes walk. The proximity itself is a kind of a munchie heaven. So, we thought, "Why not?"
The wings are kinda awesome! They're even gluten-free for those who care about these stuffs, with casava/rice flour batter. They offer a few flavors: sweet, spicy, and a curious one they call dark spicy. Sounds ominous, doesn't it? Well, it's supposed to be super hot.
We opted for the spicy and dark spicy, anticipating some serious tongue sizzle. The portions are nicely-sized, a good mix of middle wings and drums. Now, being a Thai spice-queen (ahem!), I expected the dark spicy to singe my tastebuds, so we had a side of cheese dip to kind of milden things down. And guess what? It's not spicy. Not at all. Or maybe just a tad. But definitely not in my spicy book!
Taste-wise? Pretty good. No complaints there.
In typical Korean style, they gave us plastic gloves so we don't end up with a finger-licking mess. Only thing is, they were not heat-resistant (of course, right? LOL).
It's a nice spot, but the thick batter means I can't eat too many. Just a few wings, a frosty beer, and a casual banter with friends hits the spot (or ahem! The Spot), especially with the current Chiang Mai heat.
All in all, it's okay. I'm more of an American wings person, and believe it or not, we've found only one such spot in Chiang Mai, aptly named Hot Hot Hot. That's a whole another story, though. Will dish on that in a future post. Stay tuned!
