Ein kurioser Altar | A Strange Altar

Normalerweise bin ich stetig irgendwo auf Pulau Pinang unterwegs, die Bequemlichkeit hält mich auf der Insel. Und doch kann es passieren, dass es mich für eine Tour auf das Festland verschlägt. Für mich ging es wieder und wie so oft einen Berg hinauf. Dabei bin ich an einem Altar vorbeigekommen, der ein wenig kurioser erscheint, als es vorerst den Anschein erweckte. Vom ersten Eindruck her, hat es etwas mit Buddhismus zu tun.

Normally I'm always around somewhere on Pulau Pinang, convenience keeps me on the island. And yet it can happen that I end up on the mainland for a trip. I went up a mountain again, as I often do. I passed an altar that seemed a little stranger than it initially appeared. From the first impression, it has something to do with Buddhism.

Aber warum ist an einem Berg, mitten im Wald ein Altar? So weit wie ich es verstanden habe, geht es darum, Naturgeister gnädig zu stimmen. In meiner Zeit, die ich bisher in Malaysia verbringen konnte, schnappe ich hier und dort immer etwas auf, bezogen auf derartige Orte. Doch auch weiterhin ist es nicht immer leicht nachzuvollziehen, worum genau es geht. Auch die Verbindung zum Buddhismus ist mir weiterhin nicht bekannt. Was ich sagen kann ist, so ein Altar steht meistens vor oder auf einem Felsen.

But why is there an altar on a mountain in the middle of the forest? As far as I understand it, it's about appeasing nature spirits. In the time I've been able to spend in Malaysia so far, I've always picked up something here and there in relation to places like this. But it's still not always easy to understand exactly what it's all about. I am also still not aware of the connection to Buddhism. What I can say is that such an altar usually stands in front of or on a rock.

Neben Zigaretten gab es dort noch lokalen Tabak (rechts). Links davon liegen, eingerollt, Rokok Daun, aus Nipa Palmenblättern, für das zum selber Drehen einer Zigarette.

Ok, wer es bisher geschafft hat und aufmerksam war hat, dem ist aufgefallen, nicht alles ist so richtig buddhistisch hier. Ganesha, ein Hindugott, ist als Bild auch auf dem Altar. Bisher nie so gesehen, daher auch kurios für mich. Kurios und interessant. Nur das weshalb, warum, bleibt ein Mysterium.

Ok, if you've made it this far and have been paying attention, you'll have noticed that not everything here is really Buddhist. Ganesha, a Hindu god, is also depicted on the altar. I've never seen it like this before, so it was also strange to me. Strange and interesting. Only the why remains a mystery.
