I was casually scrolling through YouTube, searching for classic Filipino movies, when I stumbled upon Manila by Night. The title intrigued me, so I clicked on it. I became really curious about what Manila was like back in the day. Watching it felt like stepping into a time machine—experiencing the city’s struggles, vibes, and stories made it feel so authentic, as if I were actually there.
Viewing Manila by Night felt like being immersed in a chaotic, vibrant, and sometimes frightening world. Directed by Ishmael Bernal, the film doesn’t shy away from depicting the harsh realities of life in Manila. It’s messy, raw, and genuine, but that’s also what makes it unforgettable.

Honestly, what amazed me was how authentic everything felt. The movie didn’t attempt to sugarcoat anything—it portrayed the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. You see Manila not as some ideal place but as a city brimming with life, struggles, and stories. I loved how each character had their own journey, yet their lives were all intertwined. It was like watching pieces of a puzzle fit together.
I’ll admit, the movie can be a bit overwhelming. There’s a lot happening all the time, and sometimes it’s difficult to keep track of everyone’s story. It’s not one of those films where you can just relax and switch off your brain—it demands your attention. Also, knowing it was censored back then makes me wonder how much more impactful it could’ve been if nothing was cut.

After watching this, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It made me realize how much is happening in people’s lives that we don’t see. We all have our struggles, but this movie heightened my awareness of how tough life can be for others, especially those just trying to survive in a big, unforgiving city. It made me feel grateful for what I have and curious to learn more about stories like these.

The way the movie portrays all these different people—like a blind masseuse, a drug addict, and a gay beautician—and how their lives intersect was so intriguing. It felt like peeking into a dozen different lives at once, and each story made me want to know more.

There’s a scene where the characters walk along the polluted Manila Bay at night. The water looks grimy, the city lights are dim, and everything feels heavy. Yet, at the same time, there’s something oddly beautiful about it. That moment really stuck with me—it felt like the whole movie captured in one shot: messed up but real.
The acting was exceptional. Albert Martinez, portraying a guy battling addiction, was remarkable. Conveying every ounce of his desperation. Cherie Gil exuded a fierce energy that made her unforgettable, while Charito Solis infused her role with a calm strength. Every member of the cast made their characters feel like real people, not merely actors performing roles.
It talks about stuff most people don’t want to talk about. It shows the hard parts of life—poverty, addiction, identity struggles—and it doesn’t try to pretty it up. Back then, this was super bold, and even now, it feels like something we need to see and think about.
If you’re into movies that make you think and feel, Manila by Night is a must-watch. It’s not light or easy, but it’s worth it. It’ll make you see the world—and maybe even yourself—a little differently. For me, it’s one of those films that stays with you long after the credits roll.
