Hello to the members of the Hive community! I’m excited to share another movie review with you. Before we dive in, I just want to say a big thank you for the support on my last blog post! I appreciate every one of you taking the time to read and engage.

Growing up watching cartoons on TV, I’ve always loved animated movies that tell exciting stories. When I first watched Urduja (2008) as a kid, I was amazed that it was a Filipino-made animated film. It tells the story of Princess Urduja, a brave warrior who is next in line to rule her kingdom. She is strong, kind, and determined, but she also faces tough choices between following her duty and marry Simakwel, a warrior chosen for her, or follow her heart and be with Limhang, a kind pirate? Along the way, she battles enemies, faces betrayals, and proves that she can lead her people. Watching this film back then reminded me of the cartoons I enjoyed, but it also made me curious about Filipino history and folklore.

I really liked Princess Urduja’s character. She wasn’t a typical princess waiting to be saved. She was the one fighting and making decisions. Limhang, her love interest, was different from Simakwel, who only cared about power. The characters around her, like her warriors and family, showed the importance of bravery and loyalty. As a kid, I admired her strength, and now as an adult, I appreciate her character even more. Watching the film again, I realize how well it portrays leadership, independence, and staying true to oneself. Qualities that remain inspiring no matter how old I am.

The movie had themes that stood out to me, like leadership, courage, and love. As a child, I saw it as an action-packed adventure, but rewatching it now, I see deeper meanings. Urduja showed that women can be strong leaders, which is something I didn’t always notice in older cartoons. Her story also had moments of sacrifice and tough decisions, making it more meaningful. What I liked most was how it highlighted Filipino culture, something I don’t usually see in animated movies. As an adult, I appreciate the effort to showcase Filipino history and traditions in an engaging way.

Since Urduja is the first full-length animated movie in the Philippines, it’s a big achievement. It proves that Filipino animators can create stories just like the ones I grew up watching on TV. While some people say the animation could be better, I still think it’s a great movie because it shares an important story. Watching Urduja again as an adult made me realize that there are so many Filipino legends and stories that deserve to be turned into animated films. It also made me think about how much animation has improved over the years and what future Filipino animators can achieve.

For me, the film is a special movie that holds different meanings at different stages of my life. As a kid, I saw it as a fun adventure with a strong princess, and as an adult, I see it as a tribute to Filipino culture and storytelling. It’s fun to watch, has a strong main character, and teaches important lessons. Even with its flaws, Urduja is a film worth watching, especially for those who grew up loving cartoons and want to reconnect with Filipino history through animation.
