Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro star in this pre-pandemic 2019 masterpiece.
Joaquin Phoenix has starred in banner told including Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, and his performance as the Joker is amazing. The Joker is portrayed as a sympathetic and complex character who becomes an antihero in the city he lives.
Phoenix is certifiably evil but portrayed as a downtrodden man with mental illness who faces the cruelty of the world. Many can relate to the struggles Phoenix faces in the film from an aging parent, economic uncertainty and mental health issues. Phoenix is delusional and has good intentions until he doesn't, which makes him more than the tragic antihero he is portrayed as. He's a danger to established society and it's institutions.
Phoenix plays an antihero, and this film was released just before the Pandemic kicked off. This is my favorite DC film, and I am a fan of the original Batman from the 1980s. This is a decidedly dark film worth watching.
