Based on real events in the city of Indiana, its director confronts us with a story with which we are falling as we learn of the true evil that hides the house in question where everything takes place.
In order to do so, he tells us the story of an absolutely dysfunctional family in which the drama intensifies sharply and in which he allows Andra Day in the lead role and Glenn Close to shine, both of whom give their all to their complex characters and their frenetic mother-daughter relationship.
The director knows how to handle the conflicts with the astuteness that is the hallmark of Daniels' dramas, and here he does it with intensity as he gives us glimpses of terror that fight with the power of a drama that at times takes over the script more than the actual scares you want to see.

When the terror breaks out, the director surprises with certain decisions that remind you of a couple of classics of the genre without forgetting that Lee Daniels dares to give us his own look at scares that do not abuse cheap resources and that really become very well achieved and terrifying.
The director's handling of giving moments to his entire cast is also worth noting and we get to see interesting moments from supporting cast such as Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Mo'Nique, Caleb McLaughlin, Anthony B. Jenkins and Demi Singleton.
It works well as a dramatic tale, which is undoubtedly helped by the cast. Lee Daniels constructs a common American story. A family drama with the racial component of the African-American community as its basic plot premise.
The construction and the director's debut in the horror genre feels tart, as you can see the intentions to give us something more than a simple horror story about a haunted house, but also the intensity of telling us a background beyond finding a fictional demon in the story makes the film have a constant struggle between the intense family drama and an interesting story of possessions and this is where the film does not end up consolidating as something really rounded in its final result.
I have come across and read jaw-dropping reviews on the film. Somehow I've bever gotten through to watching it. But i enjoyed that your review took a more calm aporoach and insight. Thanks for sharing
It's a good film, with a lot of controversy because of the subject matter.
I didn't like the ending of this movie when u watched it. It was so unsatisfying. Anyways, I'm glad you're looking it. Beautiful review by the way
I've seen this movie and it wasn't a movie I enjoyed at all.
From the beginning, the movie was making sense and all but then, her children gets possessed, that's when I got very bored of it.
Not to talk of how it ended.
I don't think it should even be considered an horror movie, being a fan of horror movies, I've seen and watched a lot.
Nice review though.
