As soon as I saw the topic of the contest, it reminded me of the movie "I Am Legend." I had heard about this film a while back but I didn't pay much attention to it because the poster had elements like weapons, which didn't really interest me. I heard from a few friends who insisted that this movie was different from ordinary action films. Being a fan of psychological thrillers, I wanted to watch it and added to my list.
When I started watching the film I was a bit biased, but the movie managed to break down those biases. "I Am Legend" is a film from 2007 directed by Francis Lawrence, starring the talented actor Will Smith. In the film it's mostly just Will Smith and his dog Sam.
The story begins with the spread of a drug tested on cancer patients by a company turning into a virus. This virus turns people into savage beings devoid of their humanity. Unlike zombies or vampires the story focuses on these humans who act like rabid animals. They cannot come out during the day and hunt at night. The virus spreads through blood and through the air. The main character Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) has developed immunity to this virus through his own vaccines. He searches for other survivors during the day in the city but hides at home at night.
Sam is Dr. Robert Neville's loyal dog in the film. He is his only companion and the last living being remaining with him. Throughout the film despite Dr. Neville's loneliness and the harsh conditions, Sam continues to survive alongside him and struggle in this post apocalyptic world.
Unlike the creatures in other movies (I call them "creatures" since I'm not entirely sure what they are) we see that the creatures in this film are more intelligent. They can track people not only by the scent of blood but also for longer periods and can set traps. So, they're not just mindless monsters; some human traits still remain.
The most important aspect that sets this film apart is not the creatures themselves. The film actually revolves around its main theme of "loneliness" keeping the creatures in the background. When the virus spreads everyone either gets infected or becomes prey to the creatures. As a result there's no one left living in the city. Dr. Robert Neville is slowly trying to cope with his loneliness. He even goes so far as to start talking to lifeless mannequins. But when he faces a tragedy the feeling of loneliness deepens even further. In this film you can observe the profound effects of loneliness on a person.

Even the loneliest people seek the company of a pet. If an apocalyptic situation happens, anyone would try to have a pet by their side because they are the best companions 😊
Absolutely true, even in an apocalyptic situation, pets can be our best companions! 🐾😊
I Am Legend might be my favorite Will Smith movie. Classic! Although, Men In Black is among my favorites too.
Absolutely agree. "Men in Black" has its own charm, making it a favorite for many as well. Will Smith has given us some fantastic movies to enjoy

This is the third time Richard Matheson's novel, I Am Legend has been adapted to film, the first starred Vincent Price, and the second starred Charlton Heston. All three have a different take, although the Vincent Price version was a little closer to Matheson's novel, and all three are good movies. This one, with Will Smith starring, is, in some ways, probably the best of the three, even though I am partial to Charlton Heston's version. The only question I have is what the heck happened to my copy of the novel? sigh
Great write-up, thanks for sharing.
